I grew up in the 80's listening to Billy on my mom's record player and now am still listening to him on my MP3. I got this because it has most of his best songs- although I am not crazy about Shock to the System. I also don't understand why some of his other soulful works are not included on any "greatest hits" albums. I would have liked for "Prodigal Blues" and "The Loveless"(Charmed Life) and "Worlds Forgotten Boy" (Whiplash Smile) to have been included here. Even so, it remains a must have for any Idol fan. Other great Billy albums are Charmed Life and Whiplash Smile as well as his latest, Devils Playground. Idolize Yourself (another hits compilation) will be released later this month with 2 new songs. Billy Idol remains "the man" of punk ... Read More:

The obvious dilemma facing any female who fronts an otherwise all-male group is that she can easily be classified as nothing more than eye candy either onstage or on the subsequent CD covers. Such is not the case with Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders anymore than it is the case with Debbie Harry of Blondie or Theresa Starr of the Echoes. All three ladies plainly govern their groups with their musical partners often being interchangeable, save for Martin Chambers of the Pretenders, Chris Stein of Blondie, or Mark Alexander of the Echoes. Just as behind every great man there stands a great woman, each of the aforementioned males lends both moral support and strong instrumental backing behind the stellar seductresses who front their acts. If ever there was such a thing as a rock n roll chameleon, Joe Jackson would be it. Over the years he has done albums that encompassed punk, new wave, pop, jazz, swing, album oriented rock, and even progressive rock. On this his first album Jackson burst on to the scene mainly appealing to the punk and new wave crowd, but unlike most artists of this ilk, Jackson could actually play the hell out a piano and wrote lyrics that were both biting and incredibly intelligent. Joe's debut would rocket him to stardom with the smash hit single "Is She Really Going Out With Him" and three other lesser hits "One More Time", "Sunday Papers" and "Got The Time". Joe's lyrics are cerebral, cynical and at time hilarious as he portrays the angst of a 20 something ... Read More:

If there's a New Order album deserving to be part of any essential albums ranking ever, it would have to be this one. A bit underproduced, perhaps too much austere for such a great release, the music still deserves the full 5 stars with no doubt.
Greatest Hits and Singles compilers from today should learn from the past by checking how this became probably the best ever out from New Order's discography, without having to spice it up with "new" releases that do not bring up anything new at all.
The perfect introduction to New Order for any newcomer, and always a pleasure for a commited fan.
A hit singles album like no one do anymore nowadays.

I saw Foals live last weekend (more on that in a bit) and immediately went out and bought their debut album. Foals has created quite a buzz in their home country of England on the strength of early singles like "Hummer" and "Matheletics", and finally in Spring, 2008, the debut album arrived.
"Antidotes" (14 tracks, including 2 bonus tracks; 53 min.) starts off a bit tentative with the misleading sound of "The French Open" but then immediately finds traction with "Cassius" (2nd UK single), followed by a blazing "Red Socks Pugie" (3rd UK single). The highlights keep on coming, including ""Balloons" (1st UK single), and even better the 1-2 knock-out punch of "Heavy Water" and "Two Steps Twice", the absolute highlights of the album. Ican't stop listening ... Read More:

As a long time, Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me era, fan of The Cure, I didn't know what to make of the first single "The One One". With "Freakshow" however, everything came together with the band firing on all cylinders. You can even hear the impact of returning genius guitarist Porl Thompson as he cuts lose. Oh and I loved the cow bell an added touch by a still great band who will go on as long as we are willing to listen and be Cured.....

People picking up The Talking Head's debut album for the first time may be in for a surprise, especially if they're used to the eccentric experimentation of the "Remain In The Light" era, or the commercialized pop of the "Little Creatures" era. Back in 1977, the Talking Heads were a punk band but mostly only in their ethics. They played simple rock tunes but most of them lacked the raw energy of punk as played by the Ramones or Clash. Indeed, much of the music here sounds like late 60s and early 70 pop rock. What seperates these songs from post-psychedelic pop, however, is the lyrics and frantic atmosphere that would go on to characterise much of The Talking Head's music in the coming years.
David Byrne's singing style is paranoid and tense and the lyrics are ... Read More:

It was a friend's party, senior year in high school, a hot June night after graduation 1980. A girl I knew arrived in a black cat-suit, dominatrix boots, and a purple telephone extension cord wrapped around her slim waist as a belt. I kissed somebody--I don't remember who. And this crazy, goofball tune pounded away on the host's JVC...
"Has anybody seen/ a dog dyed dark green?"
People seemed to know "Rock Lobster" from the year before. I guess I'd missed it. But listening to this album a week later, I found other tunes stuck out more, and one's stayed with me ever since. "Give Me Back My Man" is remarkable, and I don't care how dorky that word sounds in connection to the B-52's. The guitar work--a lonesome drone in a minor key--builds with the plaintive ... What powerful music this was, and remains. Vince Clarke, the original composer/arranger behind Depeche Mode, teams up with blue-eyed soul singer Alison Moyet, and together they create some of the most memorable, path-breaking electronic pop music ever recorded. What makes this so powerful is that it's two consummate professionals fully bringing themselves to this project - each contributing powerful material, performing as equals. Clarke's arrangements are flawless and brilliant throughout; perfectly minimalist, hard and shiny electronica that makes the absolute most of the technology at his disposal in 1982. His isn't an accidental genius - in the sense that we might only recognize it today, since these analogue synth sounds have become so popular once again - but someone completely in charge ...
