While the Devo phenomenon as a whole may be somewhat time encapsulated, this debut album has absolutely remained as cutting-edge and vibrant as the day it came out some 30 years ago. Though the band already had a great satiric concept going (de-evolution), when they teamed up with Brian Eno for this project, the stuff of demented genius was created. The sound straddles punk, new wave, and the simplistic pop ditties of the sixties. The jumpy, jagged, hypercaffeinated tunes perfectly convey Devo's warped take on pop culture, and also serve to further pop as an art form. This is not a disc that I play in heavy rotation, but it sounds fresh every time I hear it, and only gets better with time.

As a long time, Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me era, fan of The Cure, I didn't know what to make of the first single "The One One". With "Freakshow" however, everything came together with the band firing on all cylinders. You can even hear the impact of returning genius guitarist Porl Thompson as he cuts lose. Oh and I loved the cow bell an added touch by a still great band who will go on as long as we are willing to listen and be Cured.....

This CD has Halloween music that I have not found elsewhere. As a matter of fact, some of the songs on this CD are now my top favorites!
The best songs on this CD are:
Every Day is Halloween
Dead Man's Party
Pet Semetary
Time Warp (of course.. but you will probably find this on many halloween CDs)
Some of the songs called Halloween were so bad I didn't include them in my playlist for my party.
But all told, the great songs on the CD are GREAT so it is worth it if you want cool music for your party, or if you just love Halloween music!

I had this on vinyl back in the day, but my other DL records were on so much they pretty much eclipsed this one as far as spin time. I just bought it last week again on CD and am really enjoying it. I think it's much better than just a decent debut by an up and coming band, or an interesting look at DL before they hit the sound they would run with. Anyone who heard this at the time it came out would have to have realized this band was going no where but up, up, up.
In fact if this album had gotten the production it deserved DL could have gotten an even earlier launch. As it happened though, hearing just this single debut album made John "Mutt" Lange to realize that DL was a band worth working with. He had produced both Highway to Hell and Back ... Read More:
These boys managed to do the whole indie retro thing without much humiliation, but only but only a few years later, the Euro-snootiness masquerading as witty band interplay which embedded this debut with heavy buzz has seemed to wear thin, making the band's limitations seem even more apparent.

Dark, painful, angry music here. And lyrics that match the mood, attached to the most brilliant melodies Sting ever strung together on one LP.
Their previous albums only set the table for Synchronicity. Sting, stung with king-sized pain from marital woes, calls on every creative fiber beneath his frown. The result: the Police were never better, cresting their talents in a musical finale that made me grateful, in a way, that they split afterward. I doubt they could have improved on this.

A: You get The White Tie Affair.
The pop/post-punk blend is a good mix. The pop influence on a lot of the tracks make you want to dance, like "Allow Me to Introduce Myself...". It maintains its punk influence in the heavy guitars and drum beats in the choruses. If you liked early Panic! at the Disco, this is an album definitely worth getting. It's a steal at the $4.99 it's priced at now.

I own a different copy of Billy Idol's greatest hits--the version that I believe was put out around 1997. However, there are some hits from Devil's Playground and other various songs that is on THIS deluxe edition.
Let me just say this for anyone wanting this deluxe edition. I bought this not for the greatest hits on cd--that was a given, but solely for the DVD videos. Every one of the videos are spectacular, colorful--just the way I remembered them! I paid $14.99 at a small record store--the album was shrink wrapped--so it was new.
Billy Idol's image and music are larger than life and I highly recommend this to anyone who is just getting in to Idol or for a huge fan !

The obvious dilemma facing any female who fronts an otherwise all-male group is that she can easily be classified as nothing more than eye candy either onstage or on the subsequent CD covers. Such is not the case with Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders anymore than it is the case with Debbie Harry of Blondie or Theresa Starr of the Echoes. All three ladies plainly govern their groups with their musical partners often being interchangeable, save for Martin Chambers of the Pretenders, Chris Stein of Blondie, or Mark Alexander of the Echoes. Just as behind every great man there stands a great woman, each of the aforementioned males lends both moral support and strong instrumental backing behind the stellar seductresses who front their acts. On the Pretenders' debut disc, Hynde ... Read More:
