JULY 2008 REVIEW: I purchased this particular box set a little over a month ago, and I must say: it does NOT disappoint. You really can't complain; although the box set was released several years ago, and therefore the early 1990's CD mastering here isn't necessarily as strong and powerful sounding as a 2008 mastering might be, the tracks presented here are bright and clear. Approximately 100 tracks fill out this 4-CD box set, and most of the songs are winners. And they are presented here in their original mono sound mixes as originally released (an apparent problem for some reviewers here, but I had no issue with it; the songs sound the same as they always have). I have some other compulations but this collection is the best! It has all the songs you're looking for. The CD is well produced, recorded. The liner notes are informative as well. This is my second copy...I wore out my first one. I have had this for over 8 years and love it!

Good, but not up to the standards of his other works.

At the beginning of the 1970s, Stevie Wonder, along with Marvin Gaye, aimed to and succeeded in gaining control of his musical output from the bosses at Motown, with the aim of moving from singles to album-length statements with much longer and more complex songs.

Wonder's first work in this direction, Where I'm Coming From was disappointing and lacked memorable material. With "Music of My Mind", however, Wonder took even more control of what he was performing and became the first artist to play all or almost all of the instruments on a record. Only a trombone on the opening track by Art Baron and a guitar on the second by Buzzy Feiton was not his own work.

The Ultimate Collection by The Marvelettes is a very strong single CD compilation of what fine artistry these young woman produced when they were a girl group! The sound is excellent and I like the artwork.

"Please Mr. Postman" starts the track set with one of their best huts ever; they sing and harmonize to perfection; the percussion and guitar work add a lot to this tune. "Please Mr. Postman" has the group singing of a young woman who wants an important letter from the man she loves. The melody is great, too--perfect for dancing! "So Long Baby" has them singing in a higher vocal range but it still holds its own very well; and I like the piano arrangement very much. The Supremes were a phenomonem. There were many other "girl singing groups" but none had the longevity or chart impact of the Supremes. This compilation is a solid reflection of the quality Motown sound they produced. Their music is still fresh and relevant today, which is reflected by the use of their song "Your love is like an itching in my heart" being used by Steely Dan in their live shows. Well crafted songs sung by very talented singers.

I've always liked Mary Wells's voice, but I never knew she had so many great songs! Now this CD is right beside the Supremes and Miracles on my shelf. Definitely one worth buying!
