Beautiful Ballads

by: Gladys Knight

Release Date December 26, 2006
Actually purchased this after seeing her in a Divas concert at Radio City Hall. Gladys is amazing live and literally gave me goosebumps. The album is a great buy and "Neither One of Us Wants To Be The First To Say Goodbye" has already been played to death.

Loving it.

Release Date September 13, 1994
The gem on this album is "End of the Road Medley", Knight's live tribute to the musicians of yesterday who made music with SOUL, and she thanks Boyz II Men for "getting it right"! I agree, and it's a not to be missed tribute.

That being said, I also liked "Our Love", a feel good track with great vocals. "I Don't Want to Know" was a sappy ballad produced by Babyface that received lots of radio airply.

Surprisingly, some of the tracks from big name producers like Babyface, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis (Next Time), and BeBe Winans (I'll Fall in Love if You Hang Around), and George Duke (Somehow He Loves Me) were not that memorable.

Cruisin' 1968

by: Various Artists

Release Date March 31, 1993
I have collected this series since it first came out on vinyl in the 70s. Note, the vinyl editions are vastly superior to the adulterated CD versions. Many of the songs have been swapped out - no doubt due to expired licensing agreements - and this affects the flow and integrity of the original, meticulously recorded original re-creations of the old top 40 shows.

This 1968 show is decent - some of the songs sound as if they were recorded from 45 rpms - so there is that gritty sound - but I don't remember top 40 stations in 1968 playing so many songs in slightly worn out condition. Not a big deal, but a curious choice by the producer.

The commercials are great on this CD, so are all the jingles and songs. Johnny Dark is very ... Read More:

I Love Beach Music, Vol. 1 & 2

Release Date October 22, 1996
This is one of my favorite CDs.(OK, so I'm getting to the age where I'm sentimental.) I loved Beach Music when I was younger, and that hasn't changed. If you ever heard these songs on the Carolina beaches, you can't pass this up. It's worth every penny. If you recognize some of the songs, but never heard of beach music, you've got some catching up to do; but it's never too late! This one is definitely a keeper.

CD-Charts Music : The Temptations Sing Smokey

The Temptations Sing Smokey

CD-Charts > Music > Motown
by: The Temptations

Release Date October 20, 1998
The Temptations Sing Smokey is an excellent tribute to Smokey Robinson by The Temptations. The sound quality is magnificent; and the artwork is thoughtful and very nicely done.

"The Way You Do The Things You Do" is a charming love ballad that The Temptations deliver with a lot of style and grace. They sing this beautifully and they never miss a beat or a note. The percussion adds a lot to the musical arrangement, too. "Baby, Baby, I Need You" slows down the tempo a bit for this lovely slow dance mood music song that is perfect for dancing with your sweetheart late at night in your living room. "Baby, Baby, I Need You" sounds fresh and new when The Temptations perform it; it's a terrific number.

"My Girl" is a tune I'm very ... Read More:

Diana Ross - The Ultimate Collection

CD-Charts > Music > Motown
by: Diana Ross

Release Date October 18, 1994
If my memory serves me correctly, I chose this album because it had a good overview of what has been a great career for Diana Ross.
From the days of Motown and the Supremes,(which are covered in the first 5 songs), through to a galaxy of great titles, incl Endless Love, with Lionel Richie, Touch Me In The Morning, Do You Know Where You're Going To from Mahogany, Someday We'll Be Together, Chain Reaction, all great songs all instantly recognisable as vehicles for Miss Ross.
The album is not self indugent,it maintains it theme of One Woman(s) career over the decades, and presents us with 20 great songs. I love it.

American Idol Season 2: All Time Classic American Love Songs

CD-Charts > Music > Motown
by: Various Artists

Release Date April 29, 2003
Season 2 of american idol (in my opinion) had the best talent. the biggest voices and broke all stereotypes. although some people had there choice to win the finale (i really wanted kimberley locke to win), i thought they ended by pickin the right person. the previous season had there 'best' performances but this season did the opposite and decided to do love songs... honestly they should have did a greatest hits LP because i could name quite a few BRILLIANT performances by at least 5 of the contestants.

hands down the best track on the album is 'superstar' by ruben studdard. he channeled luther vandross sooooo amazingly that luther would be proud. 'killing me softley' my kim caldwell was awesome as well. she defiinatly brought the blue ... Read More:

The Woman In Red: Selections From The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

CD-Charts > Music > Motown
by: Stevie Wonder

Release Date February 03, 1992
After entering the 80's with Hotter Than July that gave him great success and performing the massive hit "Ebony And Ivory" on with Paul McCartney (for his album Tug Of War that reached #1 on both sides of the Atlantic Stevie Wonder's next move was another soundtrack album (his second after "Secret Life of Plants") but this time around it was to a blockbuster film and all of the songs were radio friendly pop songs, not instrumentals other then "It's More Then You" that wasn't written or performed by him. It was also partly a duet album with Dionne Warwick, where 2 songs were duets and 1 song solely performed by Ms Warwick. All of those 3 songs were rather forgetable ballads though. The rest are Stevie Wonder originals apart from the aformentioned instrumental ... Read More:

Four Tops - Greatest Hits

CD-Charts > Music > Motown
by: The Four Tops

Release Date October 25, 1990
Though fellow Motown label mates The Supremes and The Temptations seem to occupy a higher status in the collective memories of "boomers", the quartet known as The Four Tops had its share of top-selling classic hits, also. With strong vocals by lead Levi Stubbs, the group soared in the mid-60s, releasing a barrage of songs that climbed both the R & B and pop charts.

If one wants to know others responsible for the legend that was Motown, one needs look no further than this marvelous compilation of the best from The Four Tops.
