by: Diana Ross

Release Date October 03, 2000
The remastering on this CD blows away the Ultimate Collection away. It's not even close. There are a few mistakes on this disc. First, the CD I have has the Single Edit of "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" instead of the 6:16 Album Version. Second "Love Hangover" is the Single Edit and not the 12 Inch version as stated on the CD jacket.

I would have liked both versions. The mistakes may have been fixed in a second run. I don't know.

The tracks are very good. They sing not only other Motwon star hits but those of other record companies. Some ballards are a bit hokey..guess they had to fill the CD.But overall very good.

Release Date October 24, 2006
I give this cd a 4 star. Though the men have excellent vocals, I don't know; I wasn't really moved by any of the songs. They seemed overproduced and too slick and poppish. My spirit wasn't moved. There is nothing like communing with the spirit(s). I know I am comparing in my head their 1975 A Song for You, which I absolutely loved. The music and the songs stay in my head long after I have taken them out of my cd player. All of the tracks moved me in some way. That cd seemed more earthy.

I really liked this cd, but love, no. However, I would highly recommend it. As I said, the vocals are excellent.

CD-Charts Music : Songs in the Key of Life

Songs in the Key of Life

CD-Charts > Music > Motown
by: Stevie Wonder

Release Date April 13, 1992
It's a world unto itself. A world of possibilities, of ideas, of dreams and of intimations. It's a world of music, and at times it's a better world than ours. Songs In The Key Of Life is Stevie Wonder's genius in full bloom and on display, in all its ambition and single-mindedness and multifaceted exuberance. Despite the fact that it's absolutely sprawling (in the days of vinyl, it was spread across two full-length LPs and a bonus EP), it has a kind of unity and internal logic that's so strong that even the record's weaker songs seem absolutely necessary. The best songs, meanwhile, are just plain incredible. "I Wish" is a rattled funk monster, and "Village Ghetto Land" is a bitterly ironic piece of social commentary. "Sir Duke" is an ecstatic tribute to Mr. ... Read More:

Solo Anthology

CD-Charts > Music > Motown
by: Smokey Robinson

Release Date September 25, 2001
THE SOLO ANTHOLOGY covers Smokey Robinson's post-Miracle work of the 70s and the 80s. It includes the smash hits "Crusin'," "Being With You", and the Grammy-winning "Just To See Her" as well as such r&b hits as "Baby That's Backatcha", and "Quiet Storm."

What's interesting about this anthology is how Smokey's writing turned towards more "adult" themes. The starry-eyed romance of "More Love" is replaced with songs dealing with extramarital affairs ("The Agony and The Ecstacy"), male virginity ("Virgin Man"), hard-won independence ("I Am I Am"), human rights ("Just My Soul Responding"), and censorship("Be Kind To The Growing Mind").

While there have been many complaints that Mr. Robinson's work "lost something" after he left the Miracles, ... Read More:

Having grown up in the era of the fifties/sixties I am still a huge fan of the music from back then. I was doing a search for the 1962 version of Stranger on the Shore and took a look at this compilation in hopes of finding it here. Although it is not included here there are a lot of good songs on these cd's. Unfortunately, one of my favorites, Under The boardwalk, is not the officially released version that was aired in Detroit in the sixties. The difference may seem minor to some as this modified version is the one that has been airing on oldies stations for the past twenty or so years, but in the original version "making love" was not there...it was "falling in love" all the way through. For me, that is a huge difference. Why mess with a classic? Even if the Drifters wanted ... Read More:

Diana Ross

CD-Charts > Music > Motown
by: Diana Ross

Release Date March 26, 2002
Diana Ross' first solo record, released in 1970, features sophisticated tunes backed by the Funk Brothers at the very top of their game. This, along with Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On," is one of the most influential recordings for me as a bass player.

The bonus tracks are a gem as well - it is a trip to hear some of the tunes that I came to know as the versions recorded by The Fifth Dimension, with Diana's and Motown's interpretation.

Check out the build up about 5 minutes into "Ain't No Mountain..." You can get a better feel for the sheer genius that was James Jamerson on the "Standing in the Shadows of Motown" soundtrack CD (Deluxe Edition), but it is nice to hear it in the full perspective here.
