The success of this recording lies in the unique presentation of these wonderful works of Handel. In being recorded in the context of a Carmelite Vespers liturgy, the music takes on a new tone that would certainly be lacking in any other recording. Without this context, we cannot experience the music as it was intended to be experienced. I say, experience, for, in this recording, the music of Handel ceases to be mere 'kunstmusik', but becomes true, functional, prayer as well.

This is a stunningly beautiful recording. Expertly sung and well chosen material. CD production is a little lacking (volume is low), but otherwise well worth the acquisition, even for those that are borderline with this style/genre.

This is a wonderful recording! Healey Willan was a Canadian organist (Anglican) and composer of music for the church. His music is not particularly virtuosic or complex; it is music to be used in the context of worship for ennobling the soul, illumining scripture and edifying the listener. My favorite piece here is the gorgeous "Rise up, my Love". It never ceases to affect me no matter how many times I hear it.
The Elora Festival Singers, based in Canada, is a superb choir. Their conductor, Noel Edison, is first-rate. The only fault I can find is that the cathedral acoustic blurs the choral sound a bit more than I like.
I doubt that you will find this music performed better than it is on this recording. Add in Naxos' low price and the ... Read More:

I bought quite a few in this series and have not listened to this one yet but the others I have heard were very good. My eight year old loves to listen to them with me. They give a bit of the musicians life then a song then more info then song..... I think they are good for kids and adults to give an interesting bit of history and music to hold the attention during both.

This is one of the most exquisite recordings I've ever heard. The two sopranos Emma Kirkby and Susanne Rydén, both baroque specialists of world renown, are joined by the Bell'Arte Salzburg to perform truly glorious music of great beauty. From the very beginning of the CD, one is drawn by the delicate strength of the instrumentalists as they treat the listener to Vejvanovsky's "Sonata Laetitiae in C". This is followed by the duet "Ich verkündige Euch große Freunde", in which the seamless match of the two voices shows us the kind of glory that is rarely encountered in one lifetime.
I do not think I have ever heard a better vocal blend for baroque vocal work than Kirkby and Rydén. They both have a similar pure glimmer in the centre of their voices, ... Read More:

Amazonian shoppers who've encountered my reviews of Renaissance and Baroque vocal music might remember that I'm often skeptical of performances by choirs rather than one-on-a-part ensembles, both for stylistic and recording-technological reasons. This performance by Cantus Colln, under Konrad Junghanel, belongs in a different category. The 16 motets by Johan Pachelbel and two of the older members of the Bach family are extremely suitable for choral treatment. The sound quality is exceptionally clear and realistic. Best of all, Cantus Colln is a choir of top-notch professional singers such as Maria Christine Kiehr and Gerd Turk; I'd crawl out on the limb and say this is the best choir I've ever heard. The CD is not new; it was released in 1994, and I'm disappointed ... Read More:

This really a fine recording. I bought my copy one sunny Saturday morning in Melbourne in around 1993. I saw it on the shelf and I got my wallet out. I was completely blown away by the music on this disc. Rigatti was a real discovery for me.
The use of high falsettists in the chorus and solos is particularly effective and gives us a real insight into the sounds of music in Venice in the early 17th century.
I cannot recommend this marvellous recording too highly, it is clearly one of the best made by the Gabrieli Consort, Choir & Players.
Great playing from the strings, cornetti and tromboni.

This cd is great because unlike other classical music cds made for babies, this one even adults can enjoy. Sometimes they change the song so that it sounds more like something a baby will appeal too, but this one just keeps the original song format which means even people without babies would be able to enjoy some of Mozart's classics.
