After "Lie To Me", I thought I would buy anything this artist put out. 3 albums later, I'm regretting that decision. It started with this title. Did that trip to Memphis make him think he's Al Green? Did his guitar fall down and it can't get up? Is he only a 6 string stud in the studio with a lot of help from the engineers and timed tracking? I honestly don't get it. As utterly IMPRESSIVE and AMAZING as "Lie" was, subsequent releases have only put me to sleep. Forced blue-eyed soul ain't doing it for me. Stax/Volt is out of business and the Staple Singers aren't holding auditions. Along with Earl Hooker's "The Moon Is Rising", this album is a Chicago Blues masterpiece. Though the lead singer and harmonica player is white, his singing is more than credible and his harmonica playing is excellent. Guitarist Michael Bloomfield plays some incendiary lead guitar, and was taken from us much too early. His death is a tragedy in the truest sense of the world. I recently viewed a video of him at one of the many folk festivals during the 1960s, perhaps Newport, talking about how his father is rich, his family is Jewish, he had a Bar Mitzvah, and how he'll never be able to play or sing like Son House. This is the second Curtis Salgado disc I have bought because folks that have seen him just raved about how good he is. He must be one of those love um or hate um type artists. After repeated listens no bright spots appeared anywhere on this CD to catch my interest. My advice, listen first then buy if he hits a cord with you.

This CD, part of the soundtrack for Martin Scorsese's PBS series, showcases blues hits and singers from Robert Johnson and Son House to Robert Cray, Bonnie Raitt, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and the Allman Brothers. One can trace the evolution of blues from its raw beginnings to its more contemporary manifestations. As such, it is fun to listen to, although one can quarrel with the selections chosen for this single CD (there are other products available that are more inclusive). But I'm not quarreling about anything after having listened to this CD.

It starts right off with Robert Johnson singing "Cross Road Blues." It is always interesting listening to this artist, legend that he is. He sings with a raw blues voice and his characteristic guitar work. ... Read More:

I am a huge BLUES fan, but it is hard to find in my area, so I buy a lot of "BLUES" CDs. Although Keb" Mo is probably one of my favorites, I have played the Etta James CD all the way to work and back (60miles/day) every day since I received it from Amazon, and still not tired of her rich voice.

What else can be said? Read the other reviewers comments, as they sound very seasoned on whats good. I, for one, have been into the blues for a few years and bought this CD.
Awesome stuff!! Makes me want to smoke a fat cigar and sit on my back patio with shades on at night time. Er, well.....a really good compilation.
Buy it and you won't be disappointed.

At last a CD of Robben Ford I really liked again. In line with his first albums (although nog as good as Handful of blues, in my opinion his tour de force, hence the four stars). He's still the master of the "smooth-blues", with very tastefull guitar solos and jazz-influences. I know of only two guys who put so much jazz in their blues, Robben Ford and Melvin Taylor. And both are masters at their craft. I recommend it.
