This album includes some of Vamvakaris' best work. The songs are a fine example of when Greek music and lyrics had a real edge to them. After all they are Rebetika songs written and sang by the Grandfather of Rebetika music himself. All the songs have a raw earthiness to them partly because of Vamvakaris' voice, partly because of the lyrics and partly because of the unique style in which he plays the bouzouki. The lyrics talk of love, hashish smoking, betrayal and the trials of working class urban life in 1930s Greece amongst other things. These themes could almost be describing some of the themes prominent in American Blues. It's no surprise then that Rebetika are unofficially known as the Greek Blues. When this came on our local alternative station, WCBE, my ears perked straight up. What is THAT? I had never heard anything quite like it. I couldn't tell whether it was Arabic or Jewish (hallelujah and amen) and I had to dance while it was on, no question, in the midst of cleaning my kitchen. My pet cats and birds wondered what the deal was. When it was over I couldn't wait to hear what it was....Pharoah's Daughter? great name but still no clue, Arabic or Jewish, what's going on, is the Messiah here already? definitely overdue. So now I've found it on Amazon and I'm thrilled not just to be able to order this but to know so many other people are as blown away as I am. May the Middle East get it together the way this music does.

If you know virgin black, all you need to know that it is generally better then their first full length, and is therefore deemed essential listening to any fan of doom metal, orchestral black metal, neoclassical, neofolk, etc...
If you dont know virgin black's sound, they make genuinly beautiful music. Whereas opeth, shape of despair etc.. make suffocating clostraphobic music, and agalloch make sparse cold music virgin black create an incredibly rich warm sound. It is, in their own words, "comfort in darkness" and no amount of reviewing could sum it up better then that. It is a dark album. a depressing album, but altogether a beautiful album. Comfortable, rather then desolate.

Calling all CD file clerks, including the one this reviewer doubles as when he puts away his cds on their shiny little stands (bought cheap at Target and hastily assembled by the reviewer and file clerk): where the *heck* do you file music by the oddball, fast-paced, old-new, traditional-iconoclast, Yiddish-English makers of this hilariously titled albums like this one (RHYTHM + JEWS) and JEWS WITH HORNS?

I'm not sure there's an answer. So put off the filing and download a track or two of this amazing (as in 'love it or hate it') music. This reviewer loves it, or at least wants to register his admiration for the sheer panache of the Klezmatics' offering.

As a Canadian married to an Egyptian I hear many different sounds and voices of Middle East music in my home but none is easier to listen to than Amr Diab. I find I am even taking his CD's along in the car with me.
