And here I thought this CD was my personal discovery! What a surprise to find 20 reviews...but, OK...I'm glad.
I can't understand any comparison to Munir Bashir - Shamma's virtuosity is of a whole different order. Each note seems to have its own attack and dynamic. And his collection of "extended techniques" places him solidly in the late '20th century. Bashir is much more humble and unassuming. Sometimes I feel that Shamma approaches the overelaborated. But even if it's a bit calculated, the calculations are on a genius level. And the orphanage piece touches the heart AND the mind, on so many levels.

I enjoy listening to this CD during short periods (30 minutes) of time while driving long distances. It evokes imagery of places I have never been to, and that is interesting to me. It creates dreamy but sullen images which is why I can only enjoy it in short spurts. I prefer the instrumental pieces more than those where voices enter in. They seem to get in the way of the music sometimes because the voices are in a higher in pitch than I enjoy.
It is a terrific CD to have as background music at an opening where the art and music can mingle peacefully.

I underestimated how much I was going to like this CD. It has grown on me. I bought it months ago but did not rediscover its beauty until the last couple of weeks, and now I can't stop playing it. Some of its music is trancelike and stays with you.
This is truly the best, purest, most natural, traditional and richest expression of rock music. It is the rock music of the desert, of nomads. It is not the angry, urban, synthesized rock of the West. It is trancelike, voodooesque, and has a call and response thing to it which is uniquely African, yet this is unlike any other type of African music one may hear. It is contemporary African rock. It is sort of a blend of African rock and Gnawa (black Moroccan) music, so original and magical ... Read More:

Savina Yannatou shows great diversity and style in this beautiful album. Her sweet, ethereal, voice provides magnificent renditions of music from Greece, Italy, Armenia, Albania, the Ukraine, Moldavia, Bulgaria, Sicily, Corisica, and Palestine. Primavera en Salonica add interpretive music on the oud, accordion, darbuk, and many traditional instruments. Savina's voice and versatility are amazing. The band provides authentic and creative musical accompaniment making the sounds original but based on traditional sounds.
I was most impressed with the Slavic intonations of "Yanno Yannovitse". The Balkan instrumentation and musical rhythms are unmistakable and wonderfully authentic. "Porondos Viz Partjan" from Moldavia is a bittersweet song with ... Read More:

My first listen to this CD had me ready to frisbee it out of the car, Natacha what have you done?? Where is the Natacha I used to know? Luckily I had ripped the CD to my mp3 player and a week later while bored on a bus ride decided to have a listen.
Maybe it was the mood I was in, maybe it was the bus, but for some reason I was really diggin the exotic beats and the light mystical feel of this CD, as well as the toe tapping dance rhythms on some tracks.
The latin tracks have a great laid back sound that just picks you up and makes you drift around on a cloud, something different for Natacha that works very well.
I agree with another reviewer that the Princess Juliana presence does spoil the overall quality of this ... Read More:

Mmmm.. Fairuz' moka voice woven around a butterfinger orchestra. The recording is a comfortable presence, your room becomes the music. If you fancy Persian delights: this cd is for you.
