Every time I catch sight of a Vox Alia CD with its distinctive packaging I find resistance is futile and I end up buying it. This gorgeous collection of lullabies delivered much more than I had ever dreamt possible.

What gives this CD its magic is the fact that this is music making amongst friends and family. In fact the record label is Jordi Savall's own, Monserat Figueras is his wife, and Arianna Savall his daughter - so it really is an all family affair. The whole of Hesperion XXI play like they know each other intimately and we are just privileged eavesdroppers who were lucky enough to have overheard them. I 'happened' upon Tina Malia at a recent Qi Revolution program. She was the lunchtime entertainment, go figure. I put this CD in my car the next day. The rendition of Gayatri Mantra is profound. About half-way through the second chant, I noticed that tears were streaming from my eyes. The only words that seem appropriate are 'the peace of God that surpasses all understanding'. These chants can touch one to the very core.

This is the best CD of lullabies of this genre that I've found. The songs are beautiful, soothing, and reflective without being sappy. The guitar accompaniment to the male and female vocalists (one male and one female alternate singing the songs, i.e. female voice on #1, #2, #3, male voice on #4, #5, etc.) creates a warm, relaxed setting.

I play this every night for my girls while they fall asleep (my Mother kept the "girl version" to play when the grandkids visit, and gave us the "boy version"; but the kids don't notice the one song this affects, and I like the "boy version" words anyway!) I intend to give one to a friend with a new baby - it is VERY good!

My sister had this cd for her own baby and my daughter went right to sleep when she heard it. i had to get home and purchase it. also got the Cure one which is great. i can sit and rock baby and STILL listen to my favorite songs! i hum a long so its doubly relaxing for her. These cd's are so clever and such a great idea. A 'must purchase' for shower gift.
