This is a real nice collection of Instrumental Pop Classics showcased by the legendary Rippingtons.
The band surely concentrates more on the improvisational aspect of their music when they play their music live, which makes this effort a real joy. Paul Taylor on sax ( "Summer Lovers") and Kim Stone on bass ( "Jewel Thieves"), as well as Russ Freeman take great, jamming solos.

Let down of this recording is the unbelievebal cliche on some of the tunes. Russ Freeman tries to sound and write like Santana on "South Beach Mambo" and "Purple Haze" is a poor pseudo-take on Hendrix's music. It sounds cold and like a show band just trying to copy a cliche.

Always great to hear more EA. Although his ideas aren't always the most original, he does have a great tone that really sells any 'licks' he's throwing out there. This DVD has great interviews where he talks about his approach, kids and the other guys on the gig. Also, yeah, great playing on this DVD.
Also, this DVD/CD is a great value. Low price for a CD/DVD combo. Highly recommend.

You all know you love this music...it's stupendous, mindblowing stuff, and it sounds better on the Japanese issue set....I know because I have both. No regrets at all, and the extra 15 minutes or so on disc 2 deleted from the US release is a bonus. You want the best, so buy the best version out there!

I'm not much of a Jazz afacionado insofar as I don't follow the music of any particular band or artist. I bought this CD on the recommendation of a Blog after Oscar Peterson died. I cannot fault the recommendation and like this music immensely. It's a clean classic jazz sound with some very nice piano playing in the first CD, with the second CD being a bit of a mix. It's all live music and I like that.. the clapping can intrude on some of the tracks but you feel you're there in front of this great big piano listening to good stuff. Get it while you can.

I bought this on vinyl in 1968 when I was in the south in the Army, and couldn't believe it when I saw it out on CD just now! Now the lucky drivers around me are going to hear "Down By The Riverside" blasting out of my car everyday! Any fan of big band jazz should buy this CD for "Down By The Riverside" ALONE! That trumpet section just simply screams on that cut. Their ensembles, solo choruses and the "fours" they alternate on are the best ever recorded in my opinion, and my father was a jazz musician, my ears have heard a lot of fabulous jazz.

If you have a good system in your car you can educate thousands of drivers with this CD on what American music should sound like, and man, play it as loud as you can! One last thought: if you only can buy ... Read More:

I was listening to a Nina Simone Remix disc one day and even though I own several items of hers there was one song I didn't have. I immediately started searching for it, and even though I have most of the songs on this disc I had to have the other one too, so I purchased it. I have to tell you people this is one of the best I have heard by her. I love her voice and style anyway, so I did not hesitate to make the purchase. Even hearing the songs I own, hearing them here just sounded like she truly was singing from her soul. Trust me on this, if you don't have it, get it..you will not be disappointed in the least. I have read many of the reviews and I must say that I'm so sorry that it has taken me so long to write a review. I was there at the concert that produced this great album and I want to let everyone know that microphones were not placed at every table. The theater which created this album is a small community theater which can only fit 30 people inside. It is extremely raw. The light board is made from a cat liter box with dimmers (normally used in a house) connected to it. The stage is very very small. Actually the theater is a manhattan flo-thru apartment converted to a theater. This isn't 'west coast' vs. 'east coast.' This is five extraudinary musicians, from different backgrounds who got together for a September session to record standards and jazz classics.

Chet Baker selected Johnny Griffen on tenor saxophone, Al Haig, a pioneer of bebop piano on piano, the bassist who was never out of work in the mid 50's and early 60's, Paul Chambers, and the hosue drummer for Riverside and Prestige Records, Philly Joe Jones.

The five men play together beautifully, although Griffen is left out on four tracks. Chet was a good material picker. The album opens up with 'Fair Weather.' Other great songs are 'Moonbeams,' When Lights Are Low,' and 'Hotel 49.'
