Live-Evil

by: Miles Davis

Release Date July 29, 1997
Live Evil??..Well, no evil at all to be found here. It's just the pure heavenly jazzthing. When do we hear the music best? When it is performed Live, and that's what is happening here! They are playing in the way the word is ment. Playing, searching, taking over the soli, feeding and being fed. On this set(it's a double-cd, so plenty of joy here!)you can also hear those loveley little things done by the under-exposed mastership of percussionist Airto.. ( ever listended to his early recordings? wow!!)
I have a lot of Miles-lp's and cd's here, so the ears are well-satisfied and I listened a lot to those recordings.. Still, for me the sessions after and around BITCHESBREW are my favorits. With this Cd I added a joy that really brings a new ... Read More:

by: Miles Davis

Release Date March 15, 2005
Well, here goes. I like this album better than "Kind of Blue". Certainly, the personnel is its equal. A 19 year old Tony Williams is brilliant on percussion, setting a new standard for jazz drumming. A young Herbie Hancock, is wonderful on piano, at times playing sensitively, at other times very muscular, with a complex harmonic and melodic sense. And Ron Carter fills Paul Chambers' shoes quite adequately, actually much better than adequately; he is a joy to listen to. Miles? Well, he has never sounded better. How many times has he played "My Funny Valentine"? A million? Here, he has never played it better, like it was his first time. From his melody statement, and then solo, he brings out his bag of effects, half valved notes, mumbles, and ... Read More:

Serenity

by: Stan Getz

Release Date May 21, 1991
I bought this CD back in the early 90's and have yet to find any album by anyone that can top it. If I had to take one CD to a desert island, this would be it. Stan was the best, and this is his finest overall disk. Kenny, Victor and Rufus are the perfect match. Energy, sublime finesse, gorgeous sound quality, inventive, the right amount of each component that goes into a great jazz album, ahhhhhhh.

CD-Charts Music : My Favorite Things: Coltrane at Newport

My Favorite Things: Coltrane at Newport

CD-Charts > Music > Live Albums
by: John Coltrane

Release Date July 03, 2007
All of the music on this collection was previously available except for the 1963 recording of Impressions w/ Roy Haynes (an excerpt was previously available). The recording apparently had some problems with low-end distortion and Jimmy Garrison's bass. Thanks to the digital revolution, the folks at Impulse were able to clean some of it up, but most of Garrison's solo is M.I.A. (you can't hear the edit as far as I can tell).

It certainly is kind of weird hearing Haynes with Trane. Haynes is a very powerful drummer but he still doesn't have that explosiveness we hear when Elvin is behind the kit. Still, it's great stuff. There is an extended duet between Trane and Haynes on the 23+ minute version of Impressions.

Live at the Village Vanguard: The Master Takes

CD-Charts > Music > Live Albums
by: John Coltrane

Release Date February 24, 1998
Probably one of my favourite Coltrane records. Lots of Raw energy from Coltrane and what appears to be "stream of consciousness" playing. The interplay between piano, drums and bass here is also amazing. This is an astounding rhythm section. All the players here seem to be at the top of their game. Chasin' the Trane and Impressions are absolutely amazing.

I will make this short but the people who say this is rip off big band are idiots, and the people who say his voice, and solo cd's are garbage have little understanding of music, because there brains can't percieve it or also there afraid there friends will make fun of them to listening to compassionate songs of love, peoples lives, and world events, it just shows there bland taste in music like many in america have today, considering both big band and jazz, and classical are the heritage of this country. These are insecure people with themselves, who cannot percieve great musicianship, singing, and writing, and as far as his voice , not everyone has a high range like a chaka khan, or steve perry, it does not mean he has no talent, your corney for saying that and your comments reek ... CD-Charts Music : At the Blackhawk, Vol. 2

At the Blackhawk, Vol. 2

CD-Charts > Music > Live Albums
by: Shelly Manne & His Men

Release Date July 01, 1991
The multiple-volume _Live at the Blackhawk_ set is one of the classic live dates of the 1950s. West Coast jazz has been usually unfairly denigrated in the annals of jazz, as being too buttoned-down & superficial, in comparison with the increasingly aggressive & blunt hard bop of the East Coast of the time. A listen to any of the albums in this series will quickly dispose of such stereotypes. Manne usefully avoids the jauntiness & bounciness that sometimes beset West Coast jazz: these performances are relaxed but intensely bluesy at the core. This volume includes only three tunes, Benny Golson's classic "Step Lightly" (two takes are given, of which the 2nd, unreleased take is notably faster), a medium-up "What's New" which builds in excitement peerlessly ... CD-Charts > Music > Live Albums
by: Enrico Pieranunzi

Release Date January 10, 2006
Pieranunzi's group just packs the most in the least amount of time with an efficiency that leaves me breathless. Damn, they're good. No, over the edge good! May they be together and play and make music like this for a very long time. The album is non-stop, meaning one tune flows like a bubbling mountain stream into another leaving the listener to realize with surprise we're in new territory. New territory indeed. This recording is getting a lot of ear time.
