I was on my way to work when I heard Lonnie for the first time on our local Jazz station. I was late getting into work because I had to find out who was doing this tune. It was called "Scream" and was from this live disc. Needless to say, when I got home that day I ordered it right away based on that tune. This whole cd is great! It's got funk, rock, a bit of blues, everything you could want. Lonnie plays a mean organ, and the rest of the band is just tight! There's a young George Benson on guitar, and even the tamborine player gets a credit! This is great music, check it out!

This is Jimmy's best album, my all time favourite. This is the real deal: just organ, guitar & drums. And most tracks are 6 min and more, so you get a lot of LOUD organ by the man. To me the best track in this session is Laura, breathtaking. This album will make reevaluate the stature of jimmy as a soloist; he is right there with the best of his time: trane, ornette, sonny. A masterpiece! One of my all time favourite Blue Notes.

I will admit at the outset I have an uncommon devotion to ECM Records; there are very few that I think are real clunkers. Most have at least something interesting. In any event this one is special -- a gorgeous live recording of a performance given in October 2005. 11 tracks, performed by the guitarist Terje Rypdal and the classically trained pianist Ketil Bjornstad, most of which run continuously into the next. Still, there is great range here, both in the songs, which sound alternately like jazz, rock, and classical -- and to be forthright, occasionally veer close to new age, but which never devolve into vapid atmospherics -- and the playing, especially Rypdal's, who can work with long, smooth lines; sharp, cutting riffs; and deep, broad layers of sound. I just got this from my friend Charles Lloyd's office!
"The Nobel Committee has requested Charles Lloyd and SANGAM, with Zakir Hussain and Eric Harland to perform during the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony in Oslo on December 10th."

Why I waited so long to purchase this classic is as much of a mystery to me as Verve's slowness to publish and promote a newly remastered edition. Rate this one along with Ellington at Newport '56 and Basie at Newport '57 as one of the truly memorable recorded occasions of that 50-year-old festival. It also may be the most satisfying, representative album by the ebullient, many-faceted Mr. Gillespie.
There are numerous listeners who didn't come to Dizzy until the late 1960's and later when, like Louis, he was depending increasingly on showmanship and humor (often admittedly less hip than sappy) along with congas, vocals, and shortened, underpowered (but never uninventive) trumpet solos. To those Gillespie-ites who insist Diz was more virtuosic, daring and even musical ... Read More:

Probably one of my favourite Coltrane records. Lots of Raw energy from Coltrane and what appears to be "stream of consciousness" playing. The interplay between piano, drums and bass here is also amazing. This is an astounding rhythm section. All the players here seem to be at the top of their game. Chasin' the Trane and Impressions are absolutely amazing.

Live Evil??..Well, no evil at all to be found here. It's just the pure heavenly jazzthing. When do we hear the music best? When it is performed Live, and that's what is happening here! They are playing in the way the word is ment. Playing, searching, taking over the soli, feeding and being fed. On this set(it's a double-cd, so plenty of joy here!)you can also hear those loveley little things done by the under-exposed mastership of percussionist Airto.. ( ever listended to his early recordings? wow!!)
I have a lot of Miles-lp's and cd's here, so the ears are well-satisfied and I listened a lot to those recordings.. Still, for me the sessions after and around BITCHESBREW are my favorits. With this Cd I added a joy that really brings a new pulse to the love for Miles. Maybe McLaughlin has ... Read More:

All of the music on this collection was previously available except for the 1963 recording of Impressions w/ Roy Haynes (an excerpt was previously available). The recording apparently had some problems with low-end distortion and Jimmy Garrison's bass. Thanks to the digital revolution, the folks at Impulse were able to clean some of it up, but most of Garrison's solo is M.I.A. (you can't hear the edit as far as I can tell).
It certainly is kind of weird hearing Haynes with Trane. Haynes is a very powerful drummer but he still doesn't have that explosiveness we hear when Elvin is behind the kit. Still, it's great stuff. There is an extended duet between Trane and Haynes on the 23+ minute version of Impressions.

She has the look AND the voice! I'll make this short & simple...When the world finally takes notice to Jane Monheit...WATCH OUT! She's been releasing Great And Wonderful albums for almost 8 years! It's just a matter of time. This Live project is just another feather in her hat, and REALLY proves just how great of a singer she is. She's put in several different settings (Orchestra, Trio & Acoustic) and does a fantastic job on each and every one!
Choice Cuts are: "Over The Rainbow", "Dindi", "It Might As Well Be Spring" & "Comecar De Novo". Treat not just yourself, but a friend too! You won't be let down....Solid throughout! Oh! there's a DVD to go along with this Compact Disc!

So, I have continued to listen to this CD again and again over the last couple of years... and it still leaves me cold. I know, why such a masochist... well, maybe the answer is that I really do like Jazz, just not this album.
Obviously some people like it from the preponderance of the reviews. But I would guess that the vast majority of Jarrett/Koln concert lovers will NOT like this music anywhere near as much as most every other album he has created.
If you love Art Monk, you will probably like it (I love Monk, yet DON'T like it). If you loved Jarrett's Melody at Night, you will probably not like this album much.
At least this CD should come with a label: Caution, this music comes out of left field and is not suitable for the majority of listeners.
