CD-Charts Music : Nina Simone at the Village Gate

Nina Simone at the Village Gate

CD-Charts > Music > Live Albums
by: Nina Simone

Release Date July 16, 1991
Recorded in 1961, at the Village Gate, when Nina Simone, at age twenty-eight, was finding great success and popularity through her recordings on Colpix Records, this live performance beautifully recreates the mood and atmosphere of a Nina Simone concert. A performer with talents in many directions--and a classical background in piano, which she studied at Juilliard School of Music--Simone shows off her skills brilliantly in this CD, which never seems to repeat the same kind of music twice.

In the finger-popping "Just in Time," she begins almost in a monotone, singing the melody against a bass, but then picks up the tempo and introduces into a sparkling piano treatment, her own arrangement. The ballad "He Was Too Good For Me," ... Read More:

CD-Charts Music : Red Garland at the Prelude

Red Garland at the Prelude

CD-Charts > Music > Live Albums
by: Red Garland

Release Date February 14, 2006
Though Red Garland's probably best known to most Jazz listener's through his recordings with Miles Davis and John Coltrane, this represents a very different side of him... one that straight ahead Jazz efficianados (the Bill Evans/McCoy Tyner fanatics) might note like as much, but people who like it tastey, rhythmic and toe tapping can really dig. Under the speall of a certain other player known for his block chords and octave style (only at times a bit "smoother" and more technical on the flashy runs and single note lines), this shows a rather relaxed trio seeming almost unaware that they're being recorded and a relaxed Harlem audience attentitively enjoying the swing. Featuring Jimmy Rowser on bass and Charles "Specs" Wright on drums it was ... Read More:

CD-Charts Music : The Out-of-Towners

The Out-of-Towners

CD-Charts > Music > Live Albums
by: Keith Jarrett, Gary Peacock, Jack DeJohnette

Release Date August 31, 2004
Another fabulous album from the standards trio. The recordings were made in 2001 and clearly Jarrett is fully recovered from his illness of the late 90's as the inspiration level remains incredibly high throughout.

The 'standards' here are all very good, but the main reason to buy this recording is the great title track. This runs to nearly 20 minutes and runs through a number of styles, the dominant one being a long bluesy improvisation 6 minutes into the track.

Its difficult to rank this in the huge number of albums that the standards trio have produced over the years, but if you can only buy one, then this is as good as anything.

Giants of the Organ in Concert: The Complete Concert

Release Date June 29, 2004
This cd was not what I expected. Poorly engineered and lackluster performances by two Hammond B-3 giants. I had the album years ago, so maybe my tastes have changed.

Chet Baker in Tokyo

CD-Charts > Music > Live Albums
by: Chet Baker

Release Date August 13, 1996
My first encounter with Chet Baker was when I listened to Volume 5 of the 'ROUND MIDNIGHT' series, which is now, sadly out of print;
Here was the first 'white', proper, Bebop player that I had heard.Being a jazz afficianado, I presumed with opinionated predujice, that he was a black player, because we all know that bebop is not the domain of white boys. How wrong I was.
His performance on CHET BAKER IN TOKYO(LIVE) does not disappoint -he has been accused of being too melodic & not technical enough. Listen to his interpretation of MILES DAVIS' 'Four' on disc 2 of this recording. He is both technical & melodic. To play melodic requires a considerable degree of expertise, technical, no ??
His track on side 2 : BROKEN WING also ... Read More:

Release Date April 19, 1994
This cd is one of those ones i put on and think 'man i'm glad i'm alive!' and 'man i'm glad they've recorded it!' this live performance is one of the best ever...joe's playing is amazing...he utilises his chops and sense of music, it sounds like he has improved since his previous recordings in the sense that his playing is more refined..
i think its Ron Carter on bass and Al Foster on Drums...

Live at Baker's Keyboard Lounge

CD-Charts > Music > Live Albums
by: James Carter

Release Date April 06, 2004
I'm pretty sure the claim that Carter is the heavyweight champ on sax isn't without competition, but there has to be less serious competition for the title than there is in boxing. And,while there may be a jazz club somewhere to compete with Baker's-established in May 1934-the world's oldest jazz club,I don't wanna hear about some club in New York that charges a $40 cover and a two drink minimum.I've been going to Baker's for 30 years-and while it generally doesn't get "out of town" jazz greats anymore,Carter is an exception. When he's back in his old hometown,he likes to sit in with the local cats and I've seen him do this several times for no cover. The last time, he shot it out with a local-and excellent musician-on baritone sax-and destroyed him;there's no shame in that and ...
