CD-Charts > Music > Live Albums
by: Ramsey Lewis

Release Date September 27, 2005
This is a great record, contemporary jazz meets contemporary gospel.
Ramsey Lewis invites a gospel choir to perform with him live and it's a really good one with great singers/musicians.
The songs are mostly unknown for me expect "Oh happy day" but they sounds really good with a "jazzy touch" from Ramsey's piano!
If you're into booth gospel and contemporary/classic jazz this a record for you!
Buy it and you won't be diassapointed!

CD-Charts > Music > Live Albums
by: Shelly Manne & His Men

Release Date July 01, 1991
If you haven't heard of this guy pick up this disc and you will start collecting the other volumes. This is just a moment where a band clicks and someone (apparently Manne himself) is wise enough to get the equipment in and record it. I don't know how many versions of Summertime I have heard but when you hear this one as the opener to the collection you will find that it eclipses all the others. Just plain great jazz and a must buy!

Live In Japan

CD-Charts > Music > Live Albums
by: John Coltrane

Release Date May 14, 1991
If you are a listener who is just getting into Coltrane's work on the Impulse label or maybe you are looking for a nice version of My Favorite Things, you might as well stop reading now, this is not the music you are looking for... just yet.

Even if you are just getting into Trane's more "difficult" free period work, this is not the place to start. I would start with Kulu Se Mama, Ascension, Live in Seattle, Meditations, Expression, Stellar Regions, and Interstellar Space in that order. If you have heard all of that music and hunger for more, then you've come to the right place to find it.

This is Coltrane & Co playing with no holds barred. After hearing say, Meditations or Om you might think that this is going ... Read More:

CD-Charts > Music > Live Albums
by: Oscar Peterson

Release Date September 28, 2004
These are great recordings. Currently the last available before Oscar had a stroke, which has since restricted his left hand to very minimal use. Repeated listens to these sets lead me to think that his wonderful technique was a few percentage points down on what it was in the 50's 60's or 70's. However that is virtually irrelevant as 98% Oscar Peterson is still superior to most others. This is an essential late Peterson recording for completists. It would also serve as a fine starter pack for the newcomer to the great man.

CD-Charts > Music > Live Albums
by: Woody Shaw

Release Date March 01, 2008
I'd venture to say that at this period of his career he was the best trumpet player of all time. He was the total package...composer, brilliant technician, melodic and adventerous.
After hearing this album its hard for me to listen to Freddie Hubbard in the same way any more since Woody takes Freddies style up about 10 notches.
Woody's career was too short and inconsistant to be considered the Greatest of all time but at his peak (on this album) there was nobody better in my opinion.

By the way, I would not have happened upon Woody's music if it hadn't been for sites such as amazon, allmusicguide etc etc.
Needless to say this music isn't advertised at your local record store and is rarely stocked.
I ordered this album a few months ... Read More:

The Carnegie Hall Concert

CD-Charts > Music > Live Albums
by: Keith Jarrett

Release Date September 26, 2006
I've never understood why record producers think we want to hear minutes of applause in live recordings. This recording takes this to an absurd level at times, so that we are not only subjected to the irritation of seemingly interminable applause after a piece, but following the much-hoped-for silence preceding the next piece we get... more applause, then silence, then a bit more applause. For me it makes for an unpleasant listening experience, one I don't like to repeat often. If you like long sections of applause, though, you'll want to play it over and over.

Django's Blues

CD-Charts > Music > Live Albums
by: Django Reinhardt

Release Date July 09, 2001
Paris was the place to be before and after WWII, and Jazz in Paris captures some of those immortal moments such as Django's Blues. This is a wonderful introdution to the great guitarist as he plays some classic pieces such as Septermber Song, Brazil and Blues Primitif. The disc is divided into two performances at the Le Quintette de Hot Club in 1947, with his brother Joseph joining him on the second set on rhythm guitar. The series is beautifully packaged and you will love checking out the many other titles such as Django and Company, which includes Stephane Grappelli.

CD-Charts > Music > Live Albums
by: Hugh Masekela

Release Date July 17, 2007
Hugh just gets better and better. I had the experience of going to one of his concerts, some 15 years ago, him and Miriam Makeba.
I wish he had come to my city with this new tour. Since he didn't, the record will have to suffice, and it does. This wonderful musician, as well as civil rights activist, has done so much for African Music, Jazz music, as well as music, period. In this concert, he surrounded himself with seasoned musicians, on top of their game. I would have given them six stars, if they were available.

CD-Charts > Music > Live Albums
by: David Bromberg

Release Date January 10, 1995
I first heard Bromberg's music on a friend's album, and was wowed by I Will Not Be Your Fool. Bought the cassette and listened to it for years. But now its started to show its age and I decided to buy the CD

Well, two CDs actually. They showed up yesterday and I eagerly opened them and gave a listen. Oh my. First of all, Fool has been edited, and the ending is not the same as the one on the cassette. Several lesser songs have been added so they could make this a 2 CD set. And there is something different about several of the songs, as if they substituted a different band for this recording (The cover says no, but it sounds quite different to me).

I'm giving it 3 stars because I still love many of the songs, and if you've never heard Bromberg, you'll probably enjoy. ... Read More:
