CD-Charts Music : Live Songs

Live Songs

CD-Charts > Music > Live Albums
by: Leonard Cohen

Release Date October 08, 2001
I have been a Leonard Cohen fan for many years, but my collection was limited to I'm your man, The Future and the compilation album So long Marianne. Only recently did I fully explore So long Marianne and the earlier songs grew so much on me that I started acquiring all the original albums.

Live Songs is my first "live" album. The sound quality and musical refinement is of course not comparable to the studio recorded albums, but that is not really the point. To me the recording presents the familiar songs (previously released) in entirely new ways. Instrumentation is more bare, with lyrics mostly true to the original. Where it is different, it is different in interesting ways - really adding to the effect of the song and the emotional ... Read More:

CD-Charts Music : How Late'll Ya Play 'Til?, Vol. 1: Live

How Late'll Ya Play 'Til?, Vol. 1: Live

CD-Charts > Music > Live Albums
by: David Bromberg

Release Date January 10, 1995
I first heard Bromberg's music on a friend's album, and was wowed by I Will Not Be Your Fool. Bought the cassette and listened to it for years. But now its started to show its age and I decided to buy the CD

Well, two CDs actually. They showed up yesterday and I eagerly opened them and gave a listen. Oh my. First of all, Fool has been edited, and the ending is not the same as the one on the cassette. Several lesser songs have been added so they could make this a 2 CD set. And there is something different about several of the songs, as if they substituted a different band for this recording (The cover says no, but it sounds quite different to me).

I'm giving it 3 stars because I still love many of the songs, and if you've never ... Read More:

CD-Charts Music : The Weavers at Carnegie Hall

The Weavers at Carnegie Hall

CD-Charts > Music > Live Albums
by: The Weavers

Release Date October 25, 1990
I think this is a case of "you had to be there". If you remember the Weavers, and remember the influence they weilded, and remember them being blacklisted during the McCarthy era, you'll probably impose a lot of memories onto this average quality recording and enjoy it immensely. I don't remember any of that. I grew up when folk music was popular, not a dangerous political statement, so this just seemed like any other recording of people singing folk songs. I forget how much it cost, but I definitely got my money's worth.

CD-Charts Music : Keepers

Keepers

CD-Charts > Music > Live Albums
by: Guy Clark

Release Date March 18, 1997
If he releases the song, it's a keeper, for sure. He's written some of the best Texas music out there, including "LA Freeway" and "Desperadoes Waiting for a Train" which appear on this CD.

This live CD is well engineered. Kudos to whoever was at the boards. The sound's really good. But, the best part of Guy Clark live is hearing him tell the stories that come with the songs and there's just not enough of that here.

I love Guy Clark, but his voice sounds like a mile or so of bad Texas road in parts of this collection. Even with above average sound quality and me knowing the lyrics, I had a couple of moments where I was wondering what the heck was sung.

If you really love Guy Clark, like I do, this CD is one you'll want. ... Read More:

CD-Charts Music : Two Classic Album from The Kingston Trio: Close-Up/College Concert

Two Classic Album from The Kingston Trio: Close-Up/College Concert

CD-Charts > Music > Live Albums
by: The Kingston Trio

Release Date April 11, 2000
This is another great 2fer from Collector's Choice. I like both of them very much, with a special nod going to College Concert. Recorded in 1962, it shows the Trio sounded pretty much the same as they did in the studio. Their energy is incredible, and the sincerity is unsurpassed. They could kick Green Day's butt anyday. The version of MTA is better than the studio cut, Little Light is wonderful, and I really like The Ballad of the Shape of Things. It's a really funny, unique song, with some very subtle comedy. There's a ton of really genuine, funny dialogue between the boys that doesn't seem forced. Close Up is pretty damn good, too. It was John Stewart's first album with the Trio (you can see him nowadays on The Daily Show on Comedy Central), and it is filled ... Read More:

CD-Charts Music : Doc Watson on Stage (Featuring Merle Watson)

Doc Watson on Stage (Featuring Merle Watson)

CD-Charts > Music > Live Albums
by: Doc & Merle Watson

Release Date May 24, 1990
Just so you know, folks, there was one advantage to the double-album vinyl release (Vanguard VSD - 9/10, 1970) and that's the inclusion of Hank Snow's song "Movin' On" between "The Cloud's Are Gwine Roll Away" and the instrumental "Windy & Warm"; it was presumably removed because of the length of the album when transferred to the 80-minute CD limit. Admittedly, you don't miss much but those of you with turntables might want to keep an eye out for this one in the used record stores that are rapidly disappearing from the American landscape. For those without turntables, give thanks that this classic recording is available on CD because it's a true American treasure.

...with a pair of headphones.
This is great. Not much more to say but I was appalled by one 3 star review; thought I'd bump up the average.
DVD is great too, less so when the French narrator talks over her performance.

CD-Charts Music : From Every Stage

From Every Stage

CD-Charts > Music > Live Albums
by: Joan Baez

Release Date October 19, 1993
I love From Every Stage. If you're going to buy only one Joan Baez, it should be this one. It's got all the best of her music, including a few Dylan tunes and Cohen's Suzanne. Baez is so amazing live, and this cd really shows it.

I grew up with Joan Baez. She was one of my parents' favorite singers, so you can bet I heard her a lot, even before I even knew the words "really amazing music" or "Joan Baez." I'd list all my favorites on this cd, but that would be pointless--I love them all.

Basically, even if you don't have any other of Joan Baez's, this cd is a must. Not that I'm a great judge, but I think even a non-fan would fall in love with From Every Stage. This music truly heals the soul.
