by: Stan Rogers

Release Date January 08, 2007
The loss of Stan Rogers was a true human tragedy and beyond that, for all who loved his music and saw him whenever they got the chance, the loss was compounded. So when this album came out and I heard a couple of quite excellent cuts (Thanks to Pandora) I was really excited to get the album and bought two so I could give one as a gift as well. I was happy to get more Stan Rogers music, but I admit to being a bit disappointed that many of the songs feel contrived and lack his characteristic depth and freshness. Lest I be misconstrued to be a chooser rather than the Stan Rogers beggar we all now must be, this is not negativity so much as wistfulness that as his catalog of unreleased recordings diminishes there will be less and less to feed ... The Chad Mitchell Trio had a number of solid albums, but this, along with At the Bitter End are the best, is brilliant. It really showcases their fabulous harmonies and charisma. Very cool.

CD-Charts > Music > Live Albums
by: Neil Young & Crazy Horse

Release Date November 12, 1991
Years ago (like, 25 years ago), I heard an interview w/ David Lee Roth & Eddie Van Halen. They referred to a long, drawn-out, heavy, dramatic ending to a song as an "Armageddon" ending. Perfect name. But before any hard rock/heavy metal guys were doing it, hard-rock hippies like Neil Young invented & perfected it.

Arc is weird, loud, annoying, heavy, raucus, experimental & psychedelic. And did I mention heavy? It's all of Neil's fury unleashed over 30+ minutes. It is truly "like a hurricane". Swirling, pounding, ebbing & flowing...with no structure or guideposts. This is 1 track, 30+ minutes of thumping bass, drum rolls, cymbals, feedback, and the occasional Neil Young wail. It's not that you either "like" it or you don't. ... Read More:

Release Date June 10, 2003
My dad introduced me to this album on vinyl when I was 5 yrs old. I used to love the train sounds on Streamline Cannonball and tried to imitate on my harmonica. When CD burners came to our computers a few years back I took the time to painstakingly dub track by track this album from vinyl to CD (scratches and all). It was unreleased on CD at that time. Now, fortuately you folks don't have to do what I did. I'm ordering.

Hard Rain

CD-Charts > Music > Live Albums
by: Bob Dylan

Release Date October 25, 1990
Say what you may, He's the best. Composer, musician, performer. Hard Rain is just the icing on the cake. All different takes from the originals. But that's Dylan for you. Magnificent! "You're a Big Girl Now", is my favorite here. Love the raising of his voice and how he changes pitch. Beautiful! And the strings, awesome! Scarlet Rivera plays a haunting violin. If you love music. you have to add Hard Rain to your collection! I'm thankful to have seen him and his Rolling Thunder Review at Memorial Colliseum in Corpus Christi Tx. Kinky Friedman opened for him.

by: Glenn Yarbrough

Release Date January 01, 1997
In "A Study in Scarlet", Sherlock Holmes reminds Dr. Watson of Darwin's claim that the power of producing and appreciating music existed among the human race before the power of speech was arrived at. "Perhaps that is why we are so subtly influenced by it," Holmes goes on to say. "There are vague memories in our souls of those misty centuries when the world was in its childhood". This Glenn Yarborough arrangement might serve as proof of such a proposition.

Now Yarborough's fine tenor and winning personality stand on their own - but perhaps not as well as they once blended with the voices and personalities of Lou Gottlieb and Alex Hassilev as part of the Limeliters.

There's nothing wrong with this fine set of recordings made by Yarborough one night ... Read More:

by: Sonia Dada

Release Date June 25, 2002
I'm blessed to live in the tropics, where I do a volunteer three hour show monthly on our local public radio station, KPRG. I strive to be diverse and unpredictable, playing rock, blues, country, and lots of things in between, and pride myself on the obscure. The greatest compliment I ever heard on the show was "I don't know what the hell he's doing, but it's the best radio show on Guam".

Sonia Dada broke my pattern. Ever since I first heard them, I've had a hard time getting through a show without playing them a time or two. They have taken up residence in my car. They have taken up residence in my MP3 player. If you like rock, if you like gospel, if you just like real musicians flat getting after it, start here, with the live album. I'll warn you, though, ... CD-Charts Music : Joan Baez in Concert, Pt. 1

Joan Baez in Concert, Pt. 1

CD-Charts > Music > Live Albums
by: Joan Baez

Release Date March 05, 2002
Joan Baez' third album "In Concert Part One" remains the quintessential album of the 1960s folk revival and stands on its own as a remarkably beautiful piece of music. Although recorded in the 1960s, its atmosphere is surprisingly dark and haunting throughout and satnds up very well to almost a half-century of time.

Baez' beautiful voice was at no point so intense or powerful as it was on "In Concert Part One". On some songs, such as "Gospel Ship" and "Kumbaya", she is truly tearful yet sings with a beauty so genuine it will live in your mind forever after one or two listens. Although her version of "Matty Groves" does not quite match the astonishing rendition from Liege and Lief, it still tells a brutal tale. Malvina Reynolds' "What Have They Done to the Rain", on ...
