This makes a great introduction to the mercurial talents of the late Tim Buckley. A live concert recorded at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in 1968, this double CD contains many of his best songs up to this date, including "Buzzin' Fly", "Morning Glory" and "Troubadour". The band is quite unusual Buckley plays 12 string accoustic Guitar, Lee Underwood Lead Guitar, Danny Thompson Bass and David Friedman Vibraphone. It this last instrument thats adds something completely different to the overall sound.
The performances are impassioned and Buckley's vocals are frequently astounding. No more so than on his magical cover of Fred Neil's "Dolphins". When he starts singing the song "Sometimes I think about Saturdays child" you know are listening ... Read More:

If I were to ask someone, in the year 2008, to name a male folk singer from the 1960's I would assume that if I were to get an answer to that question that the name would be Bob Dylan. And that would be a good and appropriate choice. One can endlessly dispute whether or not Dylan was (or wanted to be) the voice of the Generation of '68 but in terms of longevity and productivity he fits the bill as a known quality. However, there were a slew of other male folk singers who tried to find their niche in the folk milieu and who, like Dylan, today continue to produce work and to perform. The artist under review Chris Smithers is one such singer/songwriter.
I do not know if Chris Smithers, like his contemporary Bob Dylan, started out wanting to ... Read More:

These days when Fairport gets mentioned it's usually the groundbreaking early folk-rockers or the current hosts of the annual Cropredy festival. Back in the mid-70s, though, a version was cobbled together from members of the 'Liege and Lief'-era band plus Sandy Denny's Fotheringay. While they may not have added as much to Fairport's catalog of original songs as other incarnations had, they were a terrific 'live' band and made Fairport lots of lifelong fans (including this one). I played the surface off my copy of this LP and was glad to find this available. Sound is good, bonus tracks are nice, no complaints. While the choice of material is odd in spots I'd give the performances five stars all around.

Dougie McLean always leaves me satisfied, musically speaking. His voice has matured over the years as has his musical style. On his live album his humor and passion comes through in a way a studio recording cannot. This purchase was not for me however, but for my son. He recently turned 40 and I went for an all too rare visit. As we drove down the back roads of South Carolina in a day trip adventure (no we were NOT lost, just exploring) we got into a discussion of favorite music. I found out he had never heard Dougie MacLean so I knew I needed to remedy that right away. Here is to getting lost...er I mean exploring on back roads and listening to good music.

There are few CD's that I find myself returning to time and again. And this, most certainly, is one of them. I purchased it in l998 and in modern times have added it to my I-Pod. John never ceases to both please and astound me with his voice, his attitude and his stunning musical ability. Though his name might not be as well known as others, his talents exceeds that of many performers who are better known. I strong recommendation as music for the soul

I have been a Kingston Trio fan since my college days in the early 60's. I have purchased all of the 19 first albums and a few of the others including some collections. When I saw the Final Concert offered, I was somewhat excited and hopeful of one last "great" performance. Unfortunately that is not delivered in this album.
I did find the album notes very interesting reading but was very disappointed in the quality of the recording itself. Having listened to most of the earlier "live" concert albums including 1964's "Back in Town" (also recorded at the Hungry i) I became accustomed to a certain "quality" of the production. Even given that there would be more than usual of trivial "banter" since this was the Trio's final performance, this one had the ... Read More:

This cd is a reminder of youth but my real reason for the purchase was the song about he and his sister and the feelings it evoked when seeing the picture of them on the piano and remembering their lives. Ironically, it was introduced to me by my much younger son, proving that the music is somewhat timeless. I enjoy the entire recording but that is by far my favorite!

This is an upgrade from a vinyl LP to a CD. The record is warp and scratchy so buying this CD and hearing the music without distortion was wonderful. This has been a favorite for a very long time, the songs old friends. I bought a record player last year so that I could listen to my LP but there's nothing like a CD. I like to get up in the morning and start my day with a spiritual twist. I sing along and know the songs well since I have been enjoying Village Gate for a long time. My very favorite track is #8, V'Zocher because I feel the soul of Shlomo's voice. I like the voice range of this song and the tambourine sounds. Sholmo is happy and bouncy, if I'm allowed to say a Lubavitch Rebbi can be bouncy. Yeah! he definitely has kavanah and his music makes it possible for ... Read More:

Yes, sweet as wine indeed. The instrumentation, the arrangements and the harmonies are all superb. Here each part shines, and each song a gem. They should go along with the classical music. Despite the fact they had got older, I find the second Carnegie Recital even better. It's really a shame that such music should ever get dusted. I also bought some Peter Seeger's solo album, not quite as interesting. Fans of Peter, Paul & Mary should be delighted to hear them if they haven't hear them.

The Chad Mitchell Trio had a number of solid albums, but this, along with At the Bitter End are the best, is brilliant. It really showcases their fabulous harmonies and charisma. Very cool.
