In the early 1960's San Francisco had a remarkable two block section called the Broadway strip. Here one could find clubs featuring most every ethnic variety of music - except the blues. When Sugar Hill opened in May of 1961, the void was filled. Terry and McGhee had a following in the Bay area from their concerts but now blues fans could see them in a club setting, which let their talent, authenticity, and charisma shine more brightly.
The songs on this disc are all originals (I Got A Little Girl, however, is quite similar to Robert Johnson's I Got A Woman) and, though the duo had played in Europe and many big US cities, show how they dug deep into their souls as they continue to inovate and make each song better. Sometimes the ... Read More:

Eddie James "Son" House was born in 1902 and was one of the earliest blues musicians in the 1920's playing with Charlie Patton and even serving as an early mentor to Robert Johnson until Johnson left town and "sold his soul to the devil" for his amazing skills.
It is amazing that with such a paucity of recordings, this Baptist bluesman's status could forever be forged in the annals of American music as legendary. Son House recorded a mere 7 Paramount sides in 1930, some field recordings by Alan Lomax in 1941 & 1942, and some sessions in 1965 after his "rediscovery." He put the guitar down around 1942 because, as he stated in an interview in the 1960's, all of his friends were dying, from Charlie Patton to Robert Johnson......he simply thought he ... Read More:

Great soul music reduced to its simplest form. Penn and Oldham make personal statements of some of their best known compositions, and there isn't a false note in the performances. Honest, heartfelt, and dramatic.

Blues on steroids. If you like blues guitar, this is the cd to have, and the playing meshes perfectly with his near perfect vocal interpretations. He had a good night, probably the best of his career.

One of the best musicians under the radar screen of popular recognition you'll ever find; James Booker is the kind of pianist that someone in the know will say "You have to hear this guy play!" And you do. Hearing him the first time is a revelation. Each additional listen adds to the enjoyment of his own eclectic funky New Orleans boogie-woogie blues style, playing like he means it, jumping from one song to the next without breaking pace, only to dissolve into a heart breaking ballad then right back into beakneck speed.

ROY BUCHANAN has been described as `The greatest unknown guitarist in the world'. He never had the deserved recognition until he passed away. It is very difficult to make up a list of the top guitarist in the world of Blues and rock music but for me Roy is one of the best guitarist in the world together with a selected list of luminaries like Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Buddy Guy, Johnny Winter, T-Bone Walker, Freddie King, Ronnie Earl, Magic Sam, Magic Slim, Elvin Bishop, Tinsley Ellis, Dave Specter, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Otis Rush or Duke Robillard among others, I also think is good to know than Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck ask Roy that he explained something to them about his accuracy technic.
`LIVE IN JAPAN' is another of his great records, It is worth to ... Read More:

I bought this for the historical value, not expecting it to be great. But it is. Last Call quickly became one of my favorite Otis Spann discs. Spann's piano is extraordinarily moving. His wife Lucille provides some fine vocals.

Even if you own "Live at the Regal", you can't go wrong picking this up. Just as "Miles In Tokyo" benefits from audience reception, so too does "Live In Japan". It really is that good.
There's an exhuberance on this recording that can rarely be found in live 'blues' albums. The band is spot-on, the solos are immaculate, and the recording is clear as a whistle. On top of that, it's a double-album worth of material, and none of it is filler.
