If you love the blues then these recordings are a must have. The pairing of the legendary Albert King with the blues virtuoso Stevie Ray Vaughan was a match made in heaven. Stevie absolutely idolized Albert and it comes through on these tracks as does the respect that Albert King had for his student. When Albert asks Stevie to play his song Pride and Joy you can sense the pride and joy it was to perform at the bequest of his mentor. These electrifying performance brought a tear of joy to my eyes. On the Pep Talk track Albert gives Stevie sage advice and prophecies the future. The Blues at Sunrise track is Bluesology 101 in of itself. I only wish I could have been a fly on the wall at these sessions.

I've always been an admirer of Roy Rogers - and I love slide guitar blues - a few of the current best purveyors being Johnny Winter, Sonny Landreth, Rory Block, John Mooney, Dave Hole, and Robert Randolph (pedal steel). Previously, some of Rogers' studio work has been a bit sterile, and sometimes his vocals can be wearing. However, in this case, Roy Rogers has set the standard in the warm, live setting of the Sierra Nevada Brewery "Big Room". All of the interaction with his longtime partner, Norton Buffalo, and the Delta Rhythm Kings, and the audience getting into it, make for an exciting listen. His slide guitar really shimmers and shakes, and all of the cuts (except for one), which were previously recorded on his other albums, really benefit ... Read More:

Forget all of this band's studio albums, this is the real deal. Like many blues bands Indigenous home is on the stage and their studio albums don't seem to capture just what they are capable of in a live setting. I've had the pleasure of seeing Indigenous live twice and they are well worth the price of admission if they ever come to your town. This album was recorded live in the studio in front of a small audience and does a very good job of capturing the band's live sound. Guitarist Mato Manji is the star here and comes off like a cross between Stevie Ray Vaughn and Jimi Hendrix. Some of the studio songs on the band's debut album are lengthened out here into all out jams which really give Mato and the band a chance to spread their wings. This is especially ... Read More:

I'll keep this review brief. This CD is nothing less than a Blues guitar statement. One like few others! An absolute must for Blues fans, period! Five stars are not enough for this CD!

Live Alive (1986) was originally released as a two-record set of live performances from 1985-86. There's a lot of music here and it's all great, but get this especially for the back-to-back versions of Texas Flood and Voodoo Chile (Slight Return). In the 6:30 minutes of Texas Flood, I have no doubt that Stevie felt the presence of God. I do just listening to it! Jimi Hendrix is channeled in the unbelievable 9:37 minutes of Voodoo Chile (Slight Return). Just these two songs are worth the price of the CD, but there is plenty more to love here. Fourteen songs that average around 5:00 minutes apiece, including Pride And Joy, Cold Shot, Willie The Wimp, Look At Little Sister, Love Struck Baby, Superstition, and more. Some of this was recorded at the Montreaux Jazz Festival ... Read More:

Read Peter's review before reading mine. I agree with Peter in terms of the sound quality being poor. No argument, it is. (I'm a recording engineer so I think I know the difference). However, the musical content is awesome containing very high, focused and sincere energy. Buy this CD as you would buy an original Robert Johnson recording or an early Miles Davis album. You aren't buying it for the sonic quality but rather for the excellent musicianship and musical wonder.

Back in 1971 I was already a fan...based on the LP, "Natch'l Blues"...this LP saw Taj take a slightly different path albeit to the same destination...But what I remember most was the naturalness and ease of his performance, the haunting horns of Howard Johnson...and the lilting guitar work of John Hall (of the band, Orleans)...his solo on the tune "Ain't Gwine To Whistle Dixie No More"...stays with me still...I can still see them up there on the old Fillmore East stage...a temple to me and others like me from my generation....a brilliant set, by a brilliant artist and a pack of excellent musicians. I was there with my bud, Steve and we both were captivated by the sounds and the spirit of the night...I was also there when John Mayall recorded the genre-defining lp, the "Turning Point"...and ...
