Stevie Ray Vaughan cited Lonnie as one of his main influences and this record clearly supports that. Incredible tone, attack and phrasing. Absolutely one of the best live electric blues recordings I have ever heard.
Release Date August 06, 1990
Here is the legendary Albert King demonstrating why he managed to influence artists like Jimi Hendrix, Buddy Guy, and Eric Clapton. If the word "stinging" applies to blues playing, then let it settle-in here: Stormy Monday Blues, I'm Gonna Move To The Outskirts Of Town, a couple of numbers associated with other "Kings", San-Hozay (Freddie King) and You Upset Me Baby (B. B. King).
San Hozay (wish they kept that one up for at least four minutes!), Crosscut Saw and Oo-ee-Baby (the closer) are uptempo and are as cleanly performed as they are mixed. To me, blues *today* is a bit bottom-heavy, and the lead vocal lacks presence. Listen to this historic set and learn what a true blues set and *recording* should sound like.

There ain't nothing like Texas blues. The song goes that if you want to play in Texas, you gotta have a fiddle in the band. That's not true. If you want to play in Texas, you have to play music that people can dance to. Cowboys, oil workers, Latinos or black folks, people in Texas like to dance and they expect performers to play good music that they can dance to.
Louisiana born grammy winner Johnny Clyde Copeland learned this while growing up in Houston, and like many other Texas bluesmen (Mr. Collins, T-Bone, SRV) his music has this influence. In the old videos of his performances people in the crowd can be seen tapping their toes, swaying to the music, clapping hands or outright dancing.

The music here is raw and real and the crowd is having a ball. I had the opportunity to see Jimmy Smith at this same venue, Marla's (maid on The Jeffersons) Memory Lane in Watts section of L. A. When I was there it was a unique adventure. My friends were from the Midwest and working in L. A. and never even knew the club existed. I wanted to see Jimmy Smith; so, we went. Some well-dressed young adults parked our car with all the courtesy and care you would expect in Beverley Hills (It turned out they were some of Minister Farakhan's church in the neighborhood.) They were just making sure that we would want to return. The show was nearly as good as the third act of this series. It brings back memories.

Ya gotta love this guy. We caught him for the first time here in Dallas (actually Arlington), last October when he played at the annual SRV Memorial Ride (being as SRV was from Dallas, it's a BIG Deal here eh).
He and the Howlers blew us away.
And this CD sounds exactly how they do on stage in front of several hundred, well on their way to being drunk/rowdy, bikers. I'd heard of O&TH but never seen/heard them myself. WOW...we will definitely be looking for them again.
What's nice about this CD is that it's a really solid sample of their style and technically, the CD is really well mastered. Difficult to believe it's a "live" recording at times...a couple of the songs were a tad muddy and I chalk that up to (again) being live but overall, ... Read More:

Recorded in 1993, John Mayall, at 60 was still cranking out incredible music, soul searching blues. He hadn't lost a thing, if anything, he's getting better, as his 70th birthday album proved. If you're a Mayall fan, your collection's not complete without this album. Excellent from beginning to end. Highly recommended.
