This is a solo club recording of the great New Orleans Pianist James Booker. A word of warning, the recordings were originally never planned for release so the Piano sound (and the sound overall) isn't great. The reason for its release though is clear. Booker was erratic and in the studio might or might not be on form that day. Here with the benefit of hours and hours of tapes they have able to put out two volumes of superb solo Piano with Booker unleashed to do his own thing for as long as he liked!

Highlight on this disc for me is the brilliant version of "On the Sunny Side of Street". Booker wasn't really a Jazz Pianist but listen to this performance and you might want to question that statement. This is a better version (except ... Read More:

Another Way to Find You

I became a Smither fan after hearing him play live, which is where he really shines, and have since made a point of catching his performances all over the U.S. I have all his CDs and this one is my perennial favorite. It's hard to articulate exactly why, since Chris is so uniformly masterful with his guitar technique and his famously smooth/gravelly voice. I guess it's largely the song choices, which are a teriffic blend of traditional blues covers and his own soulful compositions. Also the live format infuses the entire CD with an energy and consistency missing from many studio productions. This is a singular virtuoso performance; being in that audience must have been a sublime experience!

I was 12 or so when I first heard this "album". It was my introduction to Ray Charles. I had never heard anyone Wail like he did, and the version of In a little Spanish Town and his incomparable "I got a woman", along with a number of other top flight covers and other original stuff just knocked me out. I lost the album so several years ago I looked for it online and to my chagrin it was out of distribution. I was delighted when Atlantic decided to re-release it as part of their 50th anniversary.My liking of the album has not dimmed at age 61.

Warner Williams Live with Jay Summerour is an absolutely authentic Piedmont Blues album. Yes, it is hard to believe, the picture on the front is in color, and it was recorded in 2004. This is a golden nugget for lovers and collectors of authentic acoustic and Piedmont blues. Warner Williams may well be last traditional practitioner of this wonderful music, and he plays and sings with a warmth and charm that seems to emanate from his musical ancestors. Highly recommended for any lover of acoustic music.

Last of the Mississippi Jukes -- Soundtrack

We bought this DVD before taking a driving trip from North Carolina to Jackson and up the "blues alley" in Mississippi to Clarksdale, and then up to Memphis. It is a wonderful thing to see this before and during such a trip, as the dialog and music gives you a real feel for this part of the South and its musical heritage. We knew the Subway was no longer in existence when we went, so appreciated at least being aware of the history of the place. We did go to Ground Zero Blues Club in Clarksdale, owned by Morgan Freeman who also narrated much of the DVD, and were really thrilled to be there and feel part of the culture, if only for a short while. In the early 1960's San Francisco had a remarkable two block section called the Broadway strip. Here one could find clubs featuring most every ethnic variety of music - except the blues. When Sugar Hill opened in May of 1961, the void was filled. Terry and McGhee had a following in the Bay area from their concerts but now blues fans could see them in a club setting, which let their talent, authenticity, and charisma shine more brightly.

The songs on this disc are all originals (I Got A Little Girl, however, is quite similar to Robert Johnson's I Got A Woman) and, though the duo had played in Europe and many big US cities, show how they dug deep into their souls as they continue to inovate and make each song better. This is from a live radio broadcast and is about 58 minutes long. It features Allsion's brand of electric blues in a live setting with room for guitar solos and room to stretch out. He covers a few of his dad's tunes here, a Buddy Guy song, and others. If you're a fan of modern electric blues done at pretty high volume, this is topnotch stuff.

I heard a couple of cuts off this CD on a local radio station and just had to have it. Billy Gibson's hard driving, rich, articulate harmonica playing is amazing. The boundless energy level of Billy and his band is scary. This is a great album all the way through.
