I beg to differ from some reviewers that the live renditions of some of the tracks on this LP are better than the studio versions. Some are, maybe but not all and this album definitely has its moments but is a bit overrated I think compared with subsequent live concerts the band did. I had the good fortune of seeing them live in 1985 and was sorry that the 1985-86 tour was never brought out on DVD or CD.

Part one of 'Alchemy' is tedious. Too slow in the main, the instrumentals ramble at times and the weakest track on the set 'Love Over Gold' (which was not included on the vinyl version of the album) should have been left off - the original studio version of this track was definitely better; ditto 'Romeo & Juliet' which also drags ... I am a lover of live recordings, and this one exceeds expectations. The only drawback is Paul singing some of his own 90's songs, which I tend to skip over (such as Biker Like an Icon). In general, very satisfied with the CD

I love the version of El Duelo, actually, I love listening to her on it. I was happy that the song title was "con Ely Guerra" - yea, that must be the one. So I pay my buck and start listening. Hey! where's the Mexican chick? Damn it Jim! The download must be a different version, all I can figure. I wanted to hear Ely! Aye.

3 stars, not to slam them for my disappointment (amazon mixup? or did they edit her out or what? L if I know.)

The total track time of both discs runs under 78 minutes. So, this album could have been consolidated onto one disc, with no editing, and released at a one-disc price.

My dear Moodies may be a little older and a lot grayer but these fabulously talented men can STILL play the living daylights out of their instruments and rock it like no one else! Justin and John's voices have aged well and their chemistry with each other and their audience is one-of-a-kind. Great CD and the DVD is well worth getting as well. Rock on 40 more years Moodies!!

This is a real nice collection of Instrumental Pop Classics showcased by the legendary Rippingtons.
The band surely concentrates more on the improvisational aspect of their music when they play their music live, which makes this effort a real joy. Paul Taylor on sax ( "Summer Lovers") and Kim Stone on bass ( "Jewel Thieves"), as well as Russ Freeman take great, jamming solos.

Let down of this recording is the unbelievebal cliche on some of the tunes. Russ Freeman tries to sound and write like Santana on "South Beach Mambo" and "Purple Haze" is a poor pseudo-take on Hendrix's music. It sounds cold and like a show band just trying to copy a cliche.

Anyway, "Jewel Thieves", "Rain", "She likes to watch" and "Are we there yet" make this Cd a real joy for any ... Read More:

Totally Live at the Whiskey a Go Go

This is a reissue of Johnny Rivers' first and second albums (At the Whiskey a Go Go and Here We a Go Go Again!). Both albums were recorded live at the Whiskey a Go Go, where Johnny and his sidemen were the "house band" at the time. Johnny Rivers may not have been the most original rocker around, but he played with an infecious enthusiasm that was quite enjoyable. It should be pointed out that all but two of the songs here are cover versions of other people's material. The two original songs here are Johnny's composition "John Lee Hooker" (mistitled "Whiskey a Go Go"), and "Walk Myself on Home" which was written by his bass player and his drummer.
