I bought this album recently at a record store. The album was in the Latin music section of the store, and nothing in the front or back of the packaging warned me about the contents. It turns out that this is a bunch of uninspired covers and imitations of Peruvian chicha music by a bunch of Americans.

Now, don't get me wrong. There are plenty of examples of Americans playing other country's music well, and even admirably. (The best example I can think of: a lot of the classic NYC salsa orchestras from the 60's and 70's had very notable American musicians--Larry Harlow being probably the most famous one.)

I have been playing this CD over and over again, always hearing new things and changing my mind on which song is my favorite. I am a Chambao fan, and this ranks with their best. Truly a winner!

It's not the Best Tango Album in the World Ever! But it's pretty darn good. This is NOT an album where all the songs sound the same; there is a remarkable variety in the song selection. You'll hear everything from vocals, like Gardel's Volver, to Fuga Y Misterio performed by The 12 Cellists of the BPO, a strange but enchantingly beautiful selection. I highly recommend this album, but there are two reasons you might not want to buy it. First, if you already own "Buenos Aires by Night" (EMI Odeon) you'll find that eleven of the songs appear on both albums, so look for an album without so much overlap. Sometimes you think that you are going to get some wierd songs in between the hit tracks, but I really enjoyed this album. Mario really has a good ear for music.
Aveces los artistas tienen canciones raras entre las canciones buenas, pero en este caso, realmente disfrute de todas. Mario tiene excelente oido para la musica

I had been drawn to this artist after hearing music of his backing a LVMH commercial played frequently on CNBC.
Very beautiful, dense, atmospheric and melodic.
This CD uses many guitar-like instruments that are unfamilar to my ears, which is interesting. However, I was expecting something very musical like the LVMH piece, but found more noodling than melody.

Still, worth hearing for the instrumentation.

I received this cd fairly quickly...in about 5 days with basic shipping and when I read this seller's info on this cd they claimed it was like new, but when I got it I was a bit skeptical that it would play because the back of the cd looked as though they tried to buff out scratches with some sort of machine...it does play though...EXCELLENT in fact. I can talk about this song or that, or how Calexico has a distinctive and beautiful sound, and all that. Here's how I know this album is good. After I got it, I played it for an entire week to the exclusion of pretty much everything else.

It gets under your skin it's so good. It changes pace and style from song to song, so you don't get bored, and songs don't all convolve together into just one indistinguishable pile of music. It'll keep in your mind even after you turn it off, and you'll look forward to getting back home so you can listen to it again.

And then, you should go to el Guero Canelo and get the best Sonoroan hotdog ever.
