i will focus on the brasil part in this review. as other reviewers have noted, joao was at his finest on some amoroso tracks but the production is unbearable at times.
the voices on brasil are familiar to anyone who is a fan of brazilian music: gilberto gil, caetano veloso, joao gilberto, and maria bethania are among the greatest superstars all time of brazilian music individually. and on this album they all come together to play joao gilberto's style of music. i'm not sure about bethania but gil and caetano were avid joao fans. however they had never tried to replicate his sound. tropicalia's musical influences certainly included joao but were nothing like his music. in this 1981 release, we here straight bossa nova. joao plays ... Bought this as an lp when it was out. Fantastic that it's on cd. Follows Julio through the majority of his European hits. You can't help but feel as though you are somewhere in the sun when it's playing. I believe that they are all originals with Un Canto A Galicia (his 1972 Number 1 hit in Holland ,21 weeks) and Quereme Mucho, (his 1979 Number 1 hit) amongst the many great songs. Light years before he was popular in uk. You don't have to understand the language to appreciate the songs. If you want an album by Julio, get this one. You won't be disappointed.

Open Sesame is Freddie Hubbard's standout debut as a leader on Blue Note. Enlisting the help of the underrated Tina Brooks on tenor (who wrote "Open Sesame", "But Beautiful", and "Gypsy Blue"), as well as McCoy Tyner on piano, Clifford Jarvis on drums, and Sam Jones on bass. Freddie sounds amazing here, especially considering this was his first session assuming the leadership mantle. Brooks is fabulous as well and his three compositions shape the overall flavor of the album. "Open Sesame" and "Gypsy Blue" have some Eastern tinges and "But Beautiful" is an elegant ballad. I've owned this C.D. for a few years now. I first borrowed it from the library, and then had to buy it for myself. I never get tired of listening to it. It has a great variety of salsa styles. I sing along to it in the car. Viva la musica latina! Viva la salsa!

I usually listen to music on random play, shuffling through 6 CD's in a carousel CD player. Not this one! I love it so much, it always stands alone, sometimes on the repeat mode for consecutive multiple listens. After seeing "Kill Bill", I fell in love with the soundtrack, but had no idea this CD existed until recently. Every track is outstanding, the arrangements are lush, the recording quality is excellent, and the musicianship is off the chain. This CD never fails to put a smile on my face and a song in my heart. Please, Robert Rodriguez, MORE of Chingon! MORE MORE MORE!

Legends of Gypsy Flamenco

This is a wonderful compilation of some of the best gypsy flamenco song I know. The Manitas de Plata songs blew me away. In English, it means "little silver hands." Silver is high in value, and so is the quality of the music. All odf the artist play the guitar super fast it's mind boggling. The music theory is good too. Flamenco is in the Phrygian mode which you'll find some examples of if you look it up online, but the best way to get a feel for this CD is to listen to the samples. On the review that got one star, the person complained about the screeching voices. I could see how the voices would be unpleasant, but the timbre was appropriate for the gypsy style.
