That's CHA-vez. Just as he provided a venue for aging Cubans before they were gone and forgotten, Cooder, in 15 songs, shines a light on the unknown tale of how a dusty hillside Los Angeles Mexican neighborhood known as Chavez Ravine was razed in the 1950s in a "greasy handoff" to the newly arrived Dodgers baseball team. Think of the movie Chinatown. Crooked red-baiting right wing politicos, innocent citizens believing "it can't happen here," cool cats being beaten up by GIs, and a UFO-driving Space Vato (space guy) who recognizes the Ravine as the hip place to land; these are the players in Cooder's loving 21st century concept album.

Putumayo Presents: Acoustic Brazil

As with all Putamayo compilations this CD contains a variety of music from a specific region - in this case, Brazilian artists. Sometimes compilation CDs are very uneven in feel because of the variety of artists represented but this CD combination is a cohesive group of beautiful Brazilian accoustic music that makes me close my eyes and sway to the music.

This is a terrific compilation. There is not one bad song on the list. The quiet, accoustic feel is consistent throughout.

If you enjoy Brazilian music and want something a little less mellow I suggest the Putamayo compilation "Brasiliero". Other good Putamayo Latin mixes include "Cuba", "Latino Latino", and "Music from the Coffee Lands".

I purchased this CD in 2003 right before my daughter was born. I also purchased "Golden Slumbers: A fathers lullaby" which I also highly recommend. I was pregnant and the CD wasn't my favorite at first--largely because of Tina's voice. I would describe it as "sweet" and pretty, but perhaps plain. Like many others after my daughter was born and over the next couple of years it became her very favorite. Maybe it was the songs, (her favorite, "Dark Brown is the River") maybe it was the simplicity of the songs, who knows. The last couple of years the CD has gone missing. The other night my now 5-year old asked me to sing her lullabies and I started with some from this CD. I was so happy to see it still available and have reordered it. $6.25?! Wow. ... Read More:

Ibrahim Ferrer could sing the phone book and I would be enthralled. The man's voice was a treasure. This CD is not quite as good as Buena Vista Social Club, but almost nothing is. It's not as exciting as BVSC, but Ferrer is gone now, and any little phrase he sang is better than tons of other people's work.

I just saw her on Letterman. As soon as she finished playing, Letterman told Paul Shaffer that she was the "coolest guest we ever had on the show". He was right! What a sound!
