Open Sesame is Freddie Hubbard's standout debut as a leader on Blue Note. Enlisting the help of the underrated Tina Brooks on tenor (who wrote "Open Sesame", "But Beautiful", and "Gypsy Blue"), as well as McCoy Tyner on piano, Clifford Jarvis on drums, and Sam Jones on bass. Freddie sounds amazing here, especially considering this was his first session assuming the leadership mantle. Brooks is fabulous as well and his three compositions shape the overall flavor of the album. "Open Sesame" and "Gypsy Blue" have some Eastern tinges and "But Beautiful" is an elegant ballad. I teach high school Spanish so I am always on the look out for comtemporary music for my students. I am as hooked as my students. I take it from my car into my classroom where the kids, very hip OC California kids, LOVE IT! They request it all the time and have downloaded the lyrics to "get" the songs better. I love the melodies, the lyrics, and the beautiful vocals. So here are raves from people from ages 14 to 58 (me). "Mi Sol" is as touchingly romantic a ballad as you are ever going to hear and "Espacio Sideral" is pure infectious pop.

Bossa Nova started in Brazil in the late `50s. The "First Generation" included Antonio Carlos (Tom) Jobim (1927-1994), Joao Gilberto and Vinicius de Moraes as their main artists. Their themes were composed focusing on "Love, Smiles & Flowers" and greatly influenced Latin America's music and even USA's jazz composers.

The music of the present CD was recorded in 1970 when Bossa Nova was already firmly mixing with Jazz and conquering a huge melodic space at USA.
The original recording of "Tide" was done at Van Gelder studios at the same time with "Stone Flower" employing the same instrumentalists; actually a subset of them for "Stone Flower".

El CD es evocador de muchos grandes grupos latinos de Nueva York en los días tempranos de Salsa. Los 3 cantantes son fantásticos y los componentes de la orchestra son muy tradicional. 3 trompetas, 2 trombones y un saxophone barítono componen la section de instrumentos de aire. El resto del grupo se compone de conga, bongos y timbales más un competente tocador del bajo y el líder extrordinario en piano. SHO tiene un sonido muy agradable, enfrentado por 3 vocalists. Tuve el placer de ver a SHO en vivo en la Universidad de Maryland ayer y fueron enérgtico en persona que en el álbum, que sí mismo es muy dinámico. Este es un tremendo CD para cualquiera que le guste la Salsa tradicional con excelente vocales.

I first bought this album on vinyl in 1972.Malo's first & best album features some incredible electric guitar by Jorge Santana & Abel Zarate without the superstar overload of Jorge's brother.The Spanish trumpet of Luis Gasca, quite unique for a rock band in their time,& an almost staggering array of Latin percussion makes this album a real musical treat.This is not just a spin off of Santana this is Latin American rock at it's best.I thoroughly recommend it.My favourite track - "Cafe"- it really rocks!! One final consideration,this album coupled with the band's second release titled "Dos" makes a nice pair.

I find this music so refreshing because it's unlike anything else I've ever heard. I can't get it out of my head it's so addictive. If you like rock, Spanish guitar, or just good music, you'll appreciate the talent this duo brings to the table. Their other album is excellent as well.
