Ultra-Lounge, Vol. 2: Mambo Fever is a solid installment in this CD series of lounge music mostly from the 1950s and 1960s. The quality of the recordings is excellent; they've been polished up nicely. The artwork is wonderful; and don't forget to look for those drink recipes in the liner notes!

Don Swan & His Orchestra start things off with their cha cha version of "Hooray For Hollywood (Cha-Cha)." This really sounds great and it's still perfect for dancing with your sweetheart late at night in the privacy of your living room all alone. The melody gets a lot of strength from the drums and percussion, too. Jackie Davis and his musicians perform a lively rendition of Peggy Lee and David Barbour's "Mañana (Is Soon Enough For Me)." ... Strange you should mention Stan Getz and Astrud Gilberto in this review and leave out Joao Gilberto. It is true that Tom Jobim is a musical genius, wrote many of the songs that we identify as bossa nova, and is one of only two musicians that I know of to have an international airport named after him (the other is Louis Armstrong). But Joao is generally considered to be the inventor of the particular style that came to be called bossa nova [...].

So by all means buy and listen to anything by Tom Jobim, but be sure to buy and listen to anything by Joao Gilberto also.

There aren't enough superlatives to describe this performance. So I won't even try. I will say that my entire perception of "guitar" was forever changed the first time I heard this album. Not only because of the effortless 200 mph runs but moreso because thee guys can do this while paying attention to and complementing eachother's playing.

Friday Night in San Francisco is a beautiful recording with plenty of raw emotion, despite what some other reviewers have said. Once you have removed your jaw from the floor and pay attention to the phrasing, song structure, sheer improvisation, and interplay of three geniuses in their prime, you will add this to your desert island list.

This is a very nice CD. Everyone has their own opinion and like to catagorize but me...I love all types of music. And I love to listen to all genres. True Flamingo...no..but this is very good music. When I'm riding I will put it on and Mannnnnnnn...what a RIDE!

i will focus on the brasil part in this review. as other reviewers have noted, joao was at his finest on some amoroso tracks but the production is unbearable at times.
the voices on brasil are familiar to anyone who is a fan of brazilian music: gilberto gil, caetano veloso, joao gilberto, and maria bethania are among the greatest superstars all time of brazilian music individually. and on this album they all come together to play joao gilberto's style of music. i'm not sure about bethania but gil and caetano were avid joao fans. however they had never tried to replicate his sound. tropicalia's musical influences certainly included joao but were nothing like his music. in this 1981 release, we here straight bossa nova. joao plays beautifully. the production ...
