by: The "5" Royales

Release Date April 24, 2007
WOW! That was my initial reaction! I've loved The Five Royales for years, but was only familiar with their 1950's R&B material. I never knew they cut these great early soul tracks! From the opening notes of 'Show Me', my jaw dropped!

It seems clear that at this point in their career they were in competition with the early work of Wilson Pickett and Otis Redding. Hearing Johhny Tanner sing in a more gospelly manner was a revelation!

All I can say is that if you like early 60's soul (Pickett, Burke, James Brown), and are in awe of the magic the Five Royales produced in the 50's, this CD is the missing link of R&B to Soul!

by: Louis Jordan

Release Date July 19, 2005
I am surprised that Louis Jordan is not more well-known. It could be argued that the Big Band Swing musician is the root of Rock and Roll. "Beans and Cornbread" and "Saturday Night Fish Fry #1" really move.

CD-Charts Music : And the Winner Is...Capitol Sings the Best Movie Songs

And the Winner Is...Capitol Sings the Best Movie Songs

CD-Charts > Music > Jump Blues
by: Various Artists

Release Date April 07, 1992
And the Winner Is...Capitol Sings the Best Movie Songs is an excellent CD of great vocalists of the twentieth century singing their hearts out; and this makes a fine compilation of some of the best movie songs ever. Of course, it's not a complete retrospective; but as a single CD it does a very good job. The sound quality is excellent and I like that artwork, too!

Helen O'Connell sings "Lullaby Of Broadway" from Gold Diggers of 1935 with a lot of feeling; the guys on backup vocals enhance the natural beauty of this number but make no mistake about it--this is Helen O'Connell's number and she really does it up right! Listen also for Nat King Cole to perform "You'll Never Know;" he sings this with a tempo that is a bit faster than I'm used ... Read More:

Stompin' at the Savoy: The Original Indie-Label 1944-1961

CD-Charts > Music > Jump Blues
by: Various Artists

Release Date September 21, 2004
The packaging of "Stompin' At The Savoy; The Original Indie Label 1944-1961" claims that it is "The ultimate anthology of ground breaking R&B classics", and for once this is not hyperbole in any way - overstating the quality of this box set is nearly impossible. Packed full of nearly four hours of brilliantly transferred classics, this is probably the only place one can find the best secular hits and B-sides of both the Savoy and National labels in their prime (mainly 1945-1959). As such, the set is an absolute gold mine of jump blues, doo wop, R&B and other styles that verge on or prefigure soul and rock 'n' roll, representing an incredible musical education for nearly anyone.

According to the limited general liner notes, the owner of the Savoy ... Read More:

Morse Code

CD-Charts > Music > Jump Blues
by: Ella Mae Morse

Release Date June 07, 2005
I first became aware of Ella Mae Morse from watching the movie "Reveille With Beverly" on TCM. She sang with the Freddie Slack Orchestra and although I watched the movie mainly to see some early Ann Miller, I enjoyed the segments with various musical artists at least as much, and wanted to find out more about this lovely lady singing "Cow Cow Boogie." I checked out IMdB and other sources, and was glad to find that she had a fair amount of studio recordings, and many are still available. This collection from Jasmine is the only one I am familiar with, but I am very pleased with the quality. The sound is very good for music from the 40s and early 50s. The musical styles range from boogie-woogie to blues to early rock n' roll. If you can listen to Blacksmith Blues ... Read More:

CD-Charts Music : The Complete Jazz At The Philharmonic On Verve: 1944-1949

The Complete Jazz At The Philharmonic On Verve: 1944-1949

CD-Charts > Music > Jump Blues
by: Various Artists

Release Date October 27, 1998
I have to thank my father for introducing me to Jazz when I was 5 or 6 years. He got my interest by playing some of the recordings that are contained in this CD box set. Included are the classic volumes that were originally released on labels such as Norgran and Clef. Also included are unreleased concerts, and although the recording quality sometimes suffers, those concerts are still quite enjoyable.

From the very beginning, Norman Granz always hired the brightest of Jazz stars for his concerts. Some reviewers in past years have complained that, by mixing swing musicians and boppers, sometimes the chemistry suffers. But when one listens, for example, to the 1949 Carnegie Hall concert, even when trombonist Tommy Turk is followed by Charlie "Bird" Parker, ... Read More:

The Real Kansas City

CD-Charts > Music > Jump Blues
by: Various Artists

Release Date May 28, 1996
A friend loaned this disc to me as we were trying to find pre-show music for Three Wise Fools: A Comedy In Three Acts (1919) that we were producing @ Magnolia Arts Center in North Carolina. I enjoyed this disc so much that I had to get my own copy. Bennie Moten's "Prince of Wails" is an excellent track that bubbles with energy and a piano that won't quit. Other tracks from this disc offer great moments like Harry James' "Life Goes to a Party" that blares with horn and goes soft with piano and then starts to percolate again with trumpet. Count Basie's tracks here like "Lester Leaps In," "Tickle Toe," "I Left My Baby" with Jimmy Rushing's vocals & the smooth "Harvard Blues" are gorgeous pieces. George E. Lee's Novelty Singing Orchestra with "Paseo Street" puts a smile on my face. The recordings ... Read More:
