Mr. Welsh might find it interesting to know that the Carolinas were dancing to Calvin Boze years before the term "Rock and Roll" went mainstream. "Beach Music" was our term for this raw, exotic and exciting sound that could prominently be heard in the 1950's only on powerful WLAC Radio, Nashville and on the Carolina (and a few other East Coast) beaches. Talk about progessive, Mr. Welsh--we cool southerners were way ahead of the rest of the country in digging R&B!!!
But I was disappointed with this item because most of it is just too slick and polished and watered down for my taste--almost a weak parody of old-school. Get off your buns, Carolina bands, and bring back the low-fi rawness and intensity of the good old funky vinyl days!! ... Read More:

Thank you Steve King and Max Armstrong of WGN 720am radio in Chicago for turning me on to Big Bill Doggett. At roughly 4:53am in the morning Max comes on to do the farm report, and if the karma is right, Steve will play "Honky Tonk" (part 1).
With the first notes of the guitar, Max will start drolling, and reminiscing about his youth back in Indiana when the carnivals or fairs would come to his town. Back then every carnival would have that special tent where inside ladies would disrobe, what we would call a "tease show" today. "Honky Tonk" would be one of those songs playing in the background. Doggett's music is what I would call "grunt & grind", perfect mood music (no singing) all instrumentials. If this CD doesn't take you back to the early, early ... Read More:

Nappy Brown is in excellent form on this superb disc, originally recorded in the 80s with Tinsley Ellis and The Heartfixers. Brown's vocals shine on every track, and the backing from a full horn driven band sizzles, especially Ellis on a wonderfully eclectic group of tunes. This is one of the best from Nappy, a must for any blues and r&b lover.

All three discs are great, but the third (instrumental and jazzy)is outstanding. Old enough to be exposed to the popular Mercer tunes and understandingly biased regarding the commercialization of his stuff, I was thrilled to hear these renditions by the great artists selected for this disc. Worth the price for just the last disc-so consider the other two as bonuses.

This album is a literal encyclopedia, and apprenticeship for the blues guitarist! There is no date listed as to when this was recorded, but Robben shows who he is this night and one can only guess what an illustrious carear he has awaiting him. He shows the importance of the minor 6th scale, and his Mike Bloomfield influence shows strongly. Jimmy Witherspoon a man who needs no intruduction, and is missed sadly today by many, displays his usual, dazzling charm, and stage presence.
Even if your not a musician, crank this one up and enjoy! Also recommend: "Jimmy Witherspoon/Robben Ford, Aint Nothin'New About The Blues"

Great, great, great songs from the early R&B era of the late forties to the mid-fifties which were a little risque, to say the least. Some are well-known such as "Ten-Inch Record," "Sixty Minute Man," and "Work With Me Annie," but other cuts are rare and seldom heard. The songs are catchy, easy to dance to or sing to, and are hilarious.
My favorite songs on this CD are "Walk Right In, Walk Right Out," the classic fill-in-the-blanks number; "Mountain Oysters"; and, best of all, "Baby Let Me Bang Your Box." They don't make songs like this anymore, and they are timeless classics.
This CD belongs in every music lover's collection.

This is a pensive, introspective Cole breaking new ground, exploring a new kind of dialog with the piano and the orchestra. During the hight of his vocal career few realized the quality of his musicianship and piano playing. This isn't background music: you cannot anticipate the next note, so you wind up listening closely to his playing, 'feeling' his fingers on the keys. This is a musician's album, best appreciated by musicians and a few astute listeners.

So who really first sang those words "I heard the news/There's good rockin' tonight"? Not Elvis. It was one of his many influences: Mr. Blues himself, the great Wynonie Harris. Collectables, a big oldies reissue company like Rhino Records, has done an excellent job with this, perhaps the best single-disc set of Wynonie Harris. 25 great platters from his King years (the cream of the crop in his recorded material) are presented in an amiable sound quality lasting over an hour. Highlights of this disc include the title track, "All She Wants To Do Is Rock", "Sittin' On It All The Time", "Rock Mr. Blues", "Oh Babe", "Lovin' Machine", and a "Lawdy Miss Clawdy"-sounding number called "Christina." All of them are mid-tempo or fast songs and have that good ol' boogie-woogie beat ... Read More:
