Collectors of Golden Oldie R&R, R&B and Country music hits are, I'm sure, well aware of the quality received from British outlets, especially Ace Records with their almost flawless sound reproduction and copious liner notes in series such as The Golden Age Of American Rock 'n' Roll and Teen Beat, among many others. Acrobat Music & Media Ltd. is almost as good with their Jukebox Hits series of individual artists and multi-artist compilations focusing on the greats of R&B and Jazz and, so far, they seem to be largely a secret in North America. Great music; Vinson is a highly expresive blues, jazz and R/B singer; at times powerful as a blues shouter, at times imaginative as good old Satchmo.
It is only pity performances are not a bit longer so that the musicians could stretch a bit more (and there are some really fine musicians here, mostly but not exclusively of Basie background); the short licks and obligattos we get from Joe Newman, Frank Foster, Paul Quinichette and others make me wish for more...

Vinson's interpretations of "Ain't necessarily so" and "Caledonia" are particularly remarkable (that's why I feel free to mention Satch in this context)...

The Beat Generation is a term used to describe both a group of American writers who came to prominence in the late 1950s and early 1960s, and the cultural phenomena that they wrote about and inspired (later sometimes called beatniks though this is considered by many to be a pejorative term). This box set features material by genuine beats alongside "commercial" recordings made to cash in on the beatnik "fad". The CDs include poetry, jazz, news reports and other recordings related to the beat phenomenon. It is interesting and informitive if you are curious to learn about the Beat Generation.

The CD opens with "Night And Day;" the musical arrangement makes good use of the percussion and horns; the arrangement also plays with the tempo somewhat to give this a sprightly flavor. Although this session by jazz and blues legend Ruth Brown was recorded in the late 80's, Brown was still in prime form singing jazz standards and jump blues novelties. Some highlights include 5-10-15, Gee Baby Ain't I Good To You, and Teardrops From My Eyes. This is great party music, and it falls in the category of jump blues, if you like Jeannie and jimmy Cheatham, Louis Jordan and Wynonnie Harris you will also enjoy this exellent Ruth Brown re-issue. Fun & recommended music!

This is an excellent collection of blues tunes done with classic renditions. The pace is slow & easy with blues that makes you shake your head back & forth an inch at 4 a.m. when you feel low & the bottle's hitting fumes. John Lee Hooker smokes on "The Right Time," "Come on, baby, Hold my hand tight as you can, squeeze me & tell me I'm the one you love." Dinah Washington recorded "Blues for a Day" in 1945. It sounds great with this 1997 release and Washington packing each phrase with feeling, "Don't drift too far, daddy, Stick around so that you'll be near. You don't need to go out, daddy cause I got everything you need right here." The track has some luscious sax dripping wet with emotion.
