Stardust: The Complete Capitol Recordings 1955-1959

by: Nat King Cole

Release Date March 27, 2006
I usually think folks go overboard when they give a product 5 stars, but in this case, it deserves every one! The mastering of the CDs is excellent (I'm guessing, but CDs 1-4 appear to be all mono and CDs 5-11 are a mix of mono and binaural). However, in this time period, mono recording was at its peak and most people wouldn't even know that they aren't binaural recordings unless you brought it to their attention.

Nat was a world-wide singer/performer, unlike some of his peers who only had a fan base in the United States and/or Europe. There's quite a bit of Spanish language material in this set which gives the box an "international" flavor.

The large, thick book that comes with the set is well-written and has many, ... Read More:

Jumpin' Jive: Jump Blues Essentials

CD-Charts > Music > Jump Blues
by: Various Artists

Release Date March 09, 1999
Finally a title that's not misleading. Jump Blues Essentials has fantastic selections from beginning to end. This album covers all the bases, an almost chronological voyage through jump music. The first few tracks have definite roots in the big-band swing of things. The middle of the album brings you to the prime of rhythm & blues, where the blues meets a dancable jazz, while the last few songs like Hound Dog and Shake, Rattle and Roll show the natural transition of Jump Blues to Rock n' Roll.

What initially drew me to this compilation Cd was Ronnie Earl's superb "Baby Doll Blues" which is on three of his Cd's, but all are out-of-print. I was pleasantly surprised as most of the tracks on this compilation are quite good, with standouts (besides 'Baby Doll Blues') being Mike Morgan & the Crawl's "Blues for Al and Peggy" and Tutu Jones' "I'm not Ashamed to Play the Blues." The price makes this a good bargain for the quality of music. Definitely worth getting if you like Slow Blues instrumentals.

by: Illinois Jacquet

Release Date June 22, 2004

It's nice that Verve has made this excellent Argo release from 1964 available again. Illinois Jacquet is in great form, and gets excellent support from all involved, especially pianist Tommy Flanagan and guitarist Kenny Burrell. WHEN MY DREAMBOAT COMES HOME is taken medium-tempo and played in the bluesiest manner, which brings out the best of all three frontline men. Flanagan is especially impressive on LESTER LEAPS IN, on which he playes an attention-grabbbing intro and then lays out a sparkling single-note solo later on. Burrell takes a nice solo on CANADIAN SUNSET. Jacquet presents a rare treat on BLUES FOR THE EARLY BIRD by playing alto sax, but is super fine on STAR EYES, which is the highlight of the album. This is one of those albums ... Read More:
