I have been a fan of Jimmy Witherspoon for years and it was very hard to find any of his music, thanks to Amazon I have all but the religious one .
I rate this very high. I would compare him to a little like Brook Benton.

As a kid my parents had "CALL OF THE WILDEST". I used to listen to this album all the time and really loved Keely Smith's version of Autumn Leaves. I have tried over the years to find that song and couldn't, so needless to say when I found the CD on your site I was very happy.
Thank You, my only wish is that my parents were still alive to hear the album, they so loved Louie and Keely.

I saw Nellie in New York while on my honeymoon in 1948--she can take you on
a humorous ride that makes you want to jump to the rythym. This CD is a great collection of her
bouncy tunes--well-worth the purchase.

I have this entire 5 cd set with book and I can't praise it highly enough. Excellent compilation of the best jazz from the turn of the century through the 60's. I know that "The Smithsonian Collection of Classic Jazz" sounds like some dry documentary put together by a bunch of white professors using slide rules and electron microscopes to determine what indeed is the best jazz, but don't let that fool you. This set is a joy to listen to.
You won't find that it contains only what was the most popular jazz, but you will find what was the best and most innovative. The set is a cheap and quick way to familiarize yourself with the greatest names and groups in jazz history. Even if you're already familiar with these names, this set is a ... Read More:

A friend loaned this disc to me as we were trying to find pre-show music for Three Wise Fools: A Comedy In Three Acts (1919) that we were producing @ Magnolia Arts Center in North Carolina. I enjoyed this disc so much that I had to get my own copy. Bennie Moten's "Prince of Wails" is an excellent track that bubbles with energy and a piano that won't quit. Other tracks from this disc offer great moments like Harry James' "Life Goes to a Party" that blares with horn and goes soft with piano and then starts to percolate again with trumpet. Count Basie's tracks here like "Lester Leaps In," "Tickle Toe," "I Left My Baby" with Jimmy Rushing's vocals & the smooth "Harvard Blues" are gorgeous pieces. George E. Lee's Novelty Singing Orchestra with ... Read More:

Collectors of Golden Oldie R&R, R&B and Country music hits are, I'm sure, well aware of the quality received from British outlets, especially Ace Records with their almost flawless sound reproduction and copious liner notes in series such as The Golden Age Of American Rock 'n' Roll and Teen Beat, among many others. Acrobat Music & Media Ltd. is almost as good with their Jukebox Hits series of individual artists and multi-artist compilations focusing on the greats of R&B and Jazz and, so far, they seem to be largely a secret in North America. My first experience with them involved CDs covering Lucky Millinder, The Clovers, Erskine Hawkins, and Ivory Joe Hunter and, as I soon found to my delight, the 4 volumes I purchased were just the tip of the ... The Beat Generation is a term used to describe both a group of American writers who came to prominence in the late 1950s and early 1960s, and the cultural phenomena that they wrote about and inspired (later sometimes called beatniks though this is considered by many to be a pejorative term). This box set features material by genuine beats alongside "commercial" recordings made to cash in on the beatnik "fad". The CDs include poetry, jazz, news reports and other recordings related to the beat phenomenon. It is interesting and informitive if you are curious to learn about the Beat Generation.

Louis Prima and Keely Smith were a seemingly odd couple act who worked astonishingly well together on the Vegas strip and in other venues as well. This CD gives us the reasons why. Their voices are strong, vibrant and full of positive energy; and they can harmonize so well it stuns me.
The CD opens with "Night And Day;" the musical arrangement makes good use of the percussion and horns; the arrangement also plays with the tempo somewhat to give this a sprightly flavor. Louis Prima and Keely Smith's voices project warmth and passion on this number. The horns and percussion work well again for the arrangement of "All I Do Is Dream Of You;" Louis and Keely use their personal chemistry as lovers in real life to give this duet extra punch and depth, too. ...
