This is a great album. The person who wrote the review comparing Fats to Elton John is freaking nuts. Fats Waller was ten times the musician Elton John could ever hope to be. And as far as piano playing there were few then and practically none now that that can compare with him. Elton John is a punk. This guy was a genius.

If you're any fan of Georgie Fame, avoid this at any cost. Yes, there are a lot of tracks, and yes, all the charting hits are here, but that's about all the nice thing I can say about it. Sound quality is all over the map, continuing Raven's propensity towards pulling the easiest-to-find master and using it instead of doing their homework. Things are mono that should be stereo, and things that should be mono are in abominable rechanneled (i.e. phony) stereo. Fame deserves better than this. Save your money and find a copy of "20 Beat Classics" plus any of the UK CBS collections still floating around.

I eared Slam Stewart several years ago on a cassette a friend had done for me. It was a performance done with Major Holley. I didn't know Holley (I just eared Mule at some point but no more) and just had Slam Stewart as info. I searched for long time anything about Slam Stewart with no success. And then, I discovered this album. At first, I tought it was the same thing on the cassette because I was in presence of a duet. I concluded the duet I earded was Slam and Slim. I was wrong but Slam and Slim is a great discovery. I have, by now, a very good idea of what preceded Slam and Major I finally found on "Shut Yo' Mouth" at the very same time as the Complete Colombia Master Takes album.
