Master fiddler Stuff Smith flying solo would be enough to get you there and keep you there. --But add a dose of searing soul in the form of the young Jonah Jones on trumpet, along with a galaxy of seasoned and swinging side men (including drummer Cozy Cole) and you have one of the most volcanic acts in the annals of recorded jazz. To hear Smith and Jones trade choruses is to feel yourself being lifted, palpably lifted, right out of your day.

Definitive Fats Waller, Vols. 1 & 2

This collection was created for the Muzak corporation when it began. Muzak was originally designed to play on radio when a station lost its signal. What luck that they got Fats Waller to do the first tracks! His jaunty patter and wonderful musicianship is well displayed here. Best of all, these tracks were recorded on 33 1/3" LP records and so Waller can go on beyond the three-minute limitation of a '78. It's like being at a live performance! In addition there are two takes of some pieces, and wonderful recordings available nowhere else.
This is A MUST HAVE FOR THE FATS WALLER FAN.

This is a great album. The person who wrote the review comparing Fats to Elton John is freaking nuts. Fats Waller was ten times the musician Elton John could ever hope to be. And as far as piano playing there were few then and practically none now that that can compare with him. Elton John is a punk. This guy was a genius.
