THE ROOTS OF SWING N' JIVE 4 CD box set gets high marks for providing nearly four hours of music at a very fair price. All tracks are duplicates of LP cuts, 78s and a few radio transcriptions. The overall effect of this album is very much like sampling at random a well-loved record collection. As with individual preferences, certain orchestras are better represented than others. Thus, Cab Calloway has 16 tracks here, while Charlie Barnet only one; the Glenn Miller aggregation's 11 sides are offset by Les Brown's lone selection, and so on.
There's no liner notes, and no running times. What's here though is plenty of terrific big band music by a full dozen famous units. Sound quality varies from acceptable to very good. A fine set ... Read More:

Vootie Rootie! Slim & Slam are the sensationally loquacious Slim Gaillard & longtime collaborator Slam Stewart, two entertainers at the peak of their powers when these lively cuts were laid down.
Hard to describe the shtick here, but if you enjoy a good time, or kickin' it with a stiff cocktail or some muggles, you'll do fine. Sorta like a live set by Louis Prima, the rollicking playful music & interplay by the all star band transends the lack of crisp hi-fi technology.
Yes it's "vintage" but worry not about any Poppity Pops !
File under "ol school" fun and discover a couple jazz & jive innovators who created something that's missing in today's music scene.

I'm listening to Fats Waller since 47 years...I thought I had all the records. This one I'discovered today has a live broadcast, recorded at the Yacht Club NYC, with Fats' best musicians. Those eight numbers are really gorgeous.
I recommend this record to all Fats Waller fans who beleive they know evrything of him.

I am a big fan of the Theatrical Pipe Organ [as compared with the Liturgical or church organ, which has its own place in a music lover's library], and have collected recordings of Fats Waller playing the Estey Pipe Organ in Camden NJ, and the Compton Theatre Organ at Abbey Road Studios [where Glenn Miller and The Beatles also recorded!] - so when I saw this for sale I bit, put it on the box, and was treated to the sound of the 78 rpm disc originals lovingly transferred to digital, with reasonably well-suppressed surface noise and surprisingly clear ambience. My only complaint about this disc is that they rolled off the bass below 100 cycles per second, and a Pipe Organ recording sans deep bass is somewhat like a marching band sans bass drum! Other ... As far as reissues of vintage recordings go, this one is pretty lame. Fats Waller was a phenomenal pianist I admire very much and I treasure those recordings of his I have. That said, this particular CD is by no means "essential listening." Many of the recordings seem to be radio broadcasts or live appearances, although the very, very brief liner notes that accompany the disc give no indication where the recordings come from. Personnels are listed for each track, but no recording dates or locations are given. Generally, the remastering on the disc is good, and the tracks are pleasant to listen to. I don't detect any annoying digital artefacts, and surface noise is not noticeable here. Still, the recordings seem somewhat dull-sounding, and the ... Read More:

Somewhat confusingly, this material was recorded originally on the Bluebird label. In the mid to late '60s they were cleaned up, transferred well, then reissued by RCA (which owns Bluebird) in a collection called the "Vintage Series". The titles of the LPs were "Valentine Stomp", "'34-'35", and "Fractious Fingering", among others; then, in the '70s, the same tunes were again reissued - this time on double NEW Bluebird label LPs...but, here's the rub - the newer Bluebird LPs were NOT properly transfered. All of this simply means that you never knew from one reissue to another what the quality was going to be like. The tunes here are some of the best that Fats recorded - like "Got A Bran' New Suit", "Spreadin' Rhythm Around", "The Girl I Left Behind Me" (with ... Read More:

Hey there!..., all you hep cats! Another one of the singing big band leader's toe tapping great songs, is on this CD for your listening pleasure. A few familiar ones you may recognize are on this CD. Mr. Calloway has fun with the slow song, "That old black magic," The song, "Hard times," was sung on Cab's radio broadcast in 1940. The song, "The jumping jive," was the song sung in his movie he stared with Ms. Lena Horne, "Stormy weather." The scatting that he does so well, will encourage you to smile while tapping your toes. These songs are a collectable item, and a must own for your jazz collection. I always highly recommend Mr. Cab Calloway's music.
