Mashiyane pretty much made the pennywhistle a popular sound, and few people could match him for the expressiveness he brought to such a seemingly limited instrument. For an all-instrumental album highlighting a fairly oddball sound, this disc is far more captivating than one might imagine. Recommended!

Before I give you a review of this wonderful recording, a little history: Mahlathini and the Mahotella Queens were formed in 1963 at Gallo Studios; Mahlathini was the King of the Groaners, the Queens studio singers at Gallo for many popular artists (leader of the Queens, Hilda Tloubatla, also recorded tracks for the S.A.B.C. (South African Broadcasting Corporation) in the 1950's. After just eight years together with the backing band, the one and only Makgona Tsohle Band, the group split and a group of four understudies starting recording with fellow group Abafana Baseqhudeni under the Mahotella name - they produced one album, "Izibani Zomgqashiyo" of 1977 but Mbaqanga fans refused to buy the product. There is one common thread with this series from BMG/RCA Victor - they take considerable liberty when using the term "greatest hits." Thomas "Fats" Waller, born in New York City on May 21, 1904, crammed 63 legitimate hit singles into a life cut short at age 39 on December 15, 1943, and in this 14-track release they give you all of four. As near as I can figure.

That's not to say that the other 10 tracks are somehow lacking - of course they're not. Not when the artist is one of the legends of Jazz with his distinctive stride piano style and exuberant vocals, often backed by artists such as trumpeter Bill Coleman, clarinetist Rudy Powell, and tenor saxophonist Gene Sedric (who also played clarinet on some cuts).

This is really exciting music from around the early 1040's. Four beautiful voices harmonizing through jazz ballads and fast tempo numbers- fascinating rhythms, pretty guitar solos, neat tempo changes. The songs are all really well written and simple. From what I've heard of the Mills Brothers I see the resembalance only in that they both are jazz vocal groups. The Cats and the Fiddle are much less refined which gives the music more a feeling of excitement and raw emotion (depending on the subject of the song).
I was recommended this music a few years ago because the person thought that since I liked the Beach Boys I would like this. Well, I don't exactly see how they pieced that together- although there is a lot of heart in this music. I ... Read More:
