by: The Klezmatics

Release Date May 13, 2003
Calling all CD file clerks, including the one this reviewer doubles as when he puts away his cds on their shiny little stands (bought cheap at Target and hastily assembled by the reviewer and file clerk): where the *heck* do you file music by the oddball, fast-paced, old-new, traditional-iconoclast, Yiddish-English makers of this hilariously titled albums like this one (RHYTHM + JEWS) and JEWS WITH HORNS?

I'm not sure there's an answer. So put off the filing and download a track or two of this amazing (as in 'love it or hate it') music. This reviewer loves it, or at least wants to register his admiration for the sheer panache of the Klezmatics' offering.

If you're unfamiliar with the tradition, it's probably worth ... Read More:

Volac: Book of Angels, Vol. 8

CD-Charts > Music > Jewish and Yiddish Music
by: Erik Friedlander

Release Date September 25, 2007
In December of 2004, John Zorn premiered new works for his Masada project-- some 300 songs written in the previous few months and collectively referred to as "Masada Book II: The Book of Angels". During four nights of perfomances at the dearly-missed Tonic, Zorn revealed his plan to have different groups perform and record songs from the new book. Virtually everyone I spoke to left the shows talking about two things, the unnerving intensity and power of Electric Masada and the delicate beauty of Erik Friedlander's solo performances. In over two years since, we've yet to see an Electric Masada studio record, but "Volac: Book of Angels Volume 8" presents a dozen of the pieces performed by Friedlander's solo cello.

Andy statman finds a beautiful middle-ground between jazzy clarinet and classical vibes. The folk elements add character and content to the music, by putting it in a cultural context. Just wish someone would release the wonderful Swingrass '83 with Statman on mandolin: Wow!

Release Date November 20, 2007
What a great time in America! It was the Golden Age(around 1957 to Nov.22 1963) and sadly we'll never see times like that again. You can't roll back the march of time but you can listen to this great CD! For me the KT with Dave Guard was it! Just wasn't a fan of John Stewart-a talented guy- but to me his voice just didn't meld with the others to create that etherial magic that is the mystery of music...Phil and Don..John and Paul--you get the picture? The audio quality isn't the best but it's not bad by any means. It's just amazing how talented these guys were and how good they sound live--they were the real deal-no studio tricks needed. Here's to you "Lady Bird" were ever you are!

Release Date November 14, 1995
This is a reissue of material recorded and available in the 1960s. It features the London Festival Orchestra under the leadership of the wonderful Stanley Black, and includes several additional tracks not on the original album. Also liner notes are provided by the comedian Alan King.

The music is symphonic in style and just beautiful. It is hard to imagine anyone who loves Jewish music not being thrilled by this CD. And it would be a wonderful introduction for anyone who wants to introduce themselves to the same. The song Rumania, Rumania is especially good and the version of Yussel, Yussel (Joseph, Joseph) is as good as I have ever heard. While mostly orchestral in form, there are some limited vocal portions as well. I highly ... Read More:

Diaspora Soul

CD-Charts > Music > Jewish and Yiddish Music
by: Steven Bernstein

Release Date August 17, 1999
I only recently came across this album and am I glad I did -- it has given me great joy and comfort during the continuing New Orleans diaspora following Hurricane Katrina. Bernstein and company have fully captured the heart and soul of New Orleans jazz and taken it to a new level. Despite that this album was created for totally unrelated purposes, it came to me at the perfect time. You don't have to have experienced Katrina -- or be Jewish (which I'm not)-- to fully appreciate this album. It speaks to anyone who loves jazz, regardless the source material. It's funky and fun and above all, very accessible (unlike Berstein's Sexotica debacle). This is a kind of album you don't have to listen to 10 times before you appreciate it -- one play and you're ... Read More:

East Flatbush Blues

CD-Charts > Music > Jewish and Yiddish Music
by: Andy Statman

Release Date October 10, 2006
Not only is this a milestone in creative mandolin-playing and composition, but it is even getting some of the recognition it deserves! "Rawhide" was just nominated for a Grammy award. Word has it that Statman will be in Nashville to record on Bela Fleck's forthcoming CD around the time of the awards, and may be on hand to receive what his fans hope will be his Grammy. (But winner or not, Andy really outdid himself with this brilliant and many-sided performance.)
