I was pretty impressed purchasing music from Amazon for the first time. Easy, quick, great price. Got exactly the music I wanted.
Really bummed out with the Amazon downloader, though. Why, WHY, do I have to download more junk just to download songs when I (as does everyone else) already have so many music and download apps already loaded? Then, since it defaults to putting the music in Itunes, and Itunes came up with a message that there was an update to download, the Amazon downloader wasn't able to save my first 6 songs! Good thing I work with computers all the time and was able to find where they actually went. I don't think the average computer user would have been able to find them. C'mon Amazon! Keep it simple!

Hava Nagila was about the only good song on this CD in my opinion. Most of the tracks are music tracks that sound very much like the one before it. I guess that's okay if that is what you were looking for, but I was hoping for more songs with words. I played it once and tossed it in a storage box (my garage sale box).

several years ago i worked as a fundraiser. my computer dialer connected me with steven bernstein. i hadn't heard of steven bernstein at that time. he told me he was busy writing music. i asked him what kind of music he wrote. he hesitated before answering, world music. i threw out a couple names to find where we were: bill frisell and dave douglas. frisell, he said he had written music for, and douglas he had played with back in highschool. not wanting to take up more of his time, he had after all pledged a donation, i asked him who i should be listening to. me, he said, you should be listening to me. i looked for his cds and started seeing his name around, places like the jazz standard playing the music of don cherry, and on a cd featuring ... At the end of 2004, John Zorn wrote 300 (yes, that IS 300) songs for his Masada project, each song named after an angel. As such, the new material is Masada Book Two: The Book of Angels. The Masada pieces were written using the "Jewish" scales, which lends a sort of Middle Eastern meets Eastern European sound to the pieces. The first batch of Masada pieces was written primarily for the Masada band to play, Zorn has stated that this time, he doesn't want the music associated with a particular band, but rather wants this to be a songbook performed by a number of bands. This volume, by a piano trio led by Jamie Saft, is the first.
The group, consisting of Saft (piano), Greg Cohen (bass), and Ben Perowksy (drums) largely works best ... Read More:

Cantorial music was once the "art music" of everyday Jews in Eastern Europe. Today the style has become regarded as somewhat archaic (although there are still a few great chazanim around). This anthology is a good sampler of the preeminent cantors of the early 20s century, when the music was still in its heyday. Other anthologies and individual collections are available in Jewish music stores or Judaica stores.
For those interested in Sefardic chazanut, contemporary Rabbi Chaim Louk is highly recommended, especially his "Musika Andalousit" series. Hatzlachah rabbah!

This is a reissue of material recorded and available in the 1960s. It features the London Festival Orchestra under the leadership of the wonderful Stanley Black, and includes several additional tracks not on the original album. Also liner notes are provided by the comedian Alan King.
The music is symphonic in style and just beautiful. It is hard to imagine anyone who loves Jewish music not being thrilled by this CD. And it would be a wonderful introduction for anyone who wants to introduce themselves to the same. The song Rumania, Rumania is especially good and the version of Yussel, Yussel (Joseph, Joseph) is as good as I have ever heard. While mostly orchestral in form, there are some limited vocal portions as well. I highly ... Read More:

When this came on our local alternative station, WCBE, my ears perked straight up. What is THAT? I had never heard anything quite like it. I couldn't tell whether it was Arabic or Jewish (hallelujah and amen) and I had to dance while it was on, no question, in the midst of cleaning my kitchen. My pet cats and birds wondered what the deal was. When it was over I couldn't wait to hear what it was....Pharoah's Daughter? great name but still no clue, Arabic or Jewish, what's going on, is the Messiah here already? definitely overdue. So now I've found it on Amazon and I'm thrilled not just to be able to order this but to know so many other people are as blown away as I am. May the Middle East get it together the way this music does.
