I have started a collection of Klezmer music and I have never been disappointed by what I have found here on Amazon. The music is such an intricate part of the Jewish culture and this particular CD will alternately squeeze your heart and make your clap your hands...awesome!

I refer mainly to the technique and musicality of the players. The atonality, the nuances, the striking of the bows stay with me.I feel a sense of place and close to the music through this impeccable recording. I look forward to sending this CD to some of my friends . One small change I would have made though, I would have concluded it on a livelier note. Actually not... I agree, bitter sweet.

I remember recordings on this album. I got it for my Step father. If you'r from the lower East Side in NYC & Grew up in the 1920's 30's You'll like it.
I really prefer Miky Katz.

Hava Nagila was about the only good song on this CD in my opinion. Most of the tracks are music tracks that sound very much like the one before it. I guess that's okay if that is what you were looking for, but I was hoping for more songs with words. I played it once and tossed it in a storage box (my garage sale box).

Israel's CD shops boast more local content than countries several times its size, and the music is often beautiful and exciting, combining western and eastern influences with serious poetry about life in the line of fire. Only the Hebrew language prevents Israeli artists from finding wider success, and these talented lads from a village outside Jerusalem have decided to embrace both English and straight American rock. The result is a slickly professional, easily accessible CD of completely undistinguished rock wallpaper whose best track is a pale version of a Tom Waits song. Pick any Waits CDs at random: it will be more fun.

The title alone and that it is a "Rough Guide" convinced me the album would not disappoint. Call it instinct or gut intuition, I was right! The selections were made by Dan Rosenberg whose background in world music is exceptional and his travels around the world on a quest to capture the best tradtional/folk music is the envy of anyone who loves this musical genre. The whole CD is a musical feast for the ears ... The music spans a wide range of different Israeli styles.
The most appealing to this listener is called, mizrachi, which is from Yemen and Iraq. Ofra Haza has a fantastic CD, "Yemenite Songs" from which "Ode Le-Eli" was chosen, her soulful haunting voice will echo in your mind, long after the CD stops. What a shame she died at the peak of her career. ... Read More:

I stumbled upon Mickey Katz browsing for good comedy CDs for the drive. What a find. The musicians are superb, the parodies are priceless and then there's Katz himself whose musical talent, intelligence, and zaniness are over the top. Barber Of Schlemiel, which is in this excellent collection, is a masterpiece in the category with Warner Brother's What's Opera Doc? Katz uses a fair amount of Yiddish (about 1/3 Yiddish, 2/3's English), but you can get away with a rudimentary knowledge and basic knowledge of Jewish culture and holidays. You'll learn a lot more from listening, and from when your better-Yiddish-understanding friend next to you falls of his or her chair from laughing so hard.
I've been looking for along time for a DVD of Mickey Katz performing this ... Read More:

The Barry Sisters are pretty good on this but the selections are mostly 2nd rate. They have better material - why isn't "Yidl Mitn Fiedl" on this?

I've recently became a fan of David Grisman and Andy Statman. There are some real cool mandolin riffs in this album, lots of tremelo, lots of emotion. And the clarinet playing ain't bad either. It's all acoustical, and ranges from the happy and upbeat "David Melech Yisrael" and "Toska" to the emotional and melancholic "Shalom Aleichem", and "Adon Olam" a tune that sticks to you. "Kazatski" shows Grisman's virtuosity on the mandolin. If you love the Dawg, get this album. It shows the enormous range of musical styles he has.

This is the more rare side of Ofra Haza that Israelis know. Yes, every one and one of them will tell you that Ofra, upon gaining fame and success abroad, packed her bags and left Israel in a traditional Yemenite dress, ready to take over the music world (that was in 1988). But first and foremost, they know the pop star Ofra Haza, with the Farrah Fawcett hairstyle and the glitzy 80s outfits that crooned pop tunes and israeli folk songs for most of the decade. Ironically, "Im Nin'alu", undoubtedly her biggest hit around the world, is not one of her most popular hits in Israel. This CD, however, stands out among all of her recordings. It is consistent in quality and Ofra's voice is pure, angelic and heavenly as always. I get goosebumps everytime I hear "Im Nin'alu" and "My Aching ... Read More:
