Through this excellect CD, Maxwell St. provides a diverse range of klezmer, form big-band enthusastic beats, to moving solos, to the ever-popular "Yiddish Swing" of the 1920's. Being a klezmer buff and active klezmer musician, I would recommend this to anybody, but this is EXCELLENT for listeners who want to get an introduction to Klezmer, or who want to expand their klezmer or Jewish-diaspora listening.

On this album, Frank London, a trumpeter associated with John Zorn's downtown NY jazz scene and the Klezmatics, has fused the Jewish art of cantorial singing with instrumental accompaniment that suggests both the ancient, soul-wrenching melodies of the High Holy Days and the most lyrical and reflective avant-garde jazz. The result is one of the most important albums of 2005 -- a giant step forward for London, for Zorn's Tzadik label, and for jazz itself.
On his previous release, Invocations, London deployed mournful trumpet lines against moody but relatively static backgrounds played on harmonium and glass harmonica. It was a very pretty, shimmering, meditative album, but Hazonos is much more intense without losing any of the ... Read More:

Way back in the fifties I became aware of Theo. Bikel's work in folk songs of many languages. I recently became interested in looking into his more recent work. I have enjoyed his later releases and was interested in comparing his current "voice" with older times.
This CD, "A Folksingers Choice" does take me back to the earlier time. These old recordings of Bikel, re-released on CD, confirm my memory of the earlier time. I don't find the work as great as I had remembered it, but still quite enjoyable.

"The Unknown Masada" is the third in the Masada Tenth Anniversary series of releases, and like the previous volume ("Voices in the Wilderness") is an anthology of different performers doing Masada tunes. The difference here is that whereas that last volume consisted of performances of previously recorded songs from the Masada songbook, this volume consists of previously unrecorded pieces.
Like "Voices in the Wilderness", this record suffers from a sort of inconsistency induced upon it by having a dozen tracks by a dozen different artists-- the material is all at worse listenable and at best highly enjoyable. Several of the cuts really impressed me, Yoshida Tatsua's "Shofetim" is a sort of prog rock meets Masada sound, with overblown ... Read More:

The pieces by Bonime, Chajes, Achron, and Lavry are gems. Joseph Achron and Julius Chajes deserve to be far better known than they are. Both composers were born in Poland but their music transcends national boundaries.

The Klezmer Conservatory Band was formed at the New England Conservatory of Music in the early eighties, really just for a jam session of Jewish music. When they got requests to play at weddings and b'nai mitzvot, they realized they had something special and organized as a band. Along with the Klezmatics, KCB was one of the leaders of the modern klezmer revival. Klezmer Conservatory Band is more traditional, while the Klezmatics are a bit edgier. Many other groups have followed, and the roots are interconnected between many of the groups.
I am a fan of both the Klezmatics and the Klezmer Conservatory Band and have each of the ten KCB CD releases. This is one of their better CDs and has some true gems on it. With Judy Bressler as vocalist, KCB ... Read More:

From Basya Schechter and friends comes this mesmerizing collection of songs inspired by traditional Jewish music from around the world. The world percussion and group vocals give a folksy feel to the music, and some of the arrangements are lively and even danceable, like "Ija Mia," "Shnirele Perele," "Afilu," and "Lecha Dodi." Others are more like the sort of reflective folk music or light jazz that one might hear in a trendy coffee shop. But all the selections have an air of gentle whimsy about them, as though drawn from hearts and souls that seen the world, forgiven its flaws, and embraced its people with love and understanding. The musicians of Pharoah's Daughter are: Basya Schechter and Benoir on guitars (at least some of which are tuned in quartertones, ... Read More:
