For those unaware, 'Great Jewish Music' is a series released on John Zorn's Tzadik label, which pays homage to Jewish songwriters by way of a selection of Tzadik artists covering their tunes. The Serge Gainsbourg compilation is the second in the series, following Burt Bacharach. It doesn't quite match the Bacharach one, but is still well worth checking out.
The first two tracks are alone almost worth the price of admission. Elysian Fields' atmospheric take on 'Les Amours Perdues' discards the groove of the original, but it's still got plenty of soul, and is just beautiful. Then Mike Patton does all the voices (male and female), not to mention all the instruments, on 'Ford Mustang' and almost manages to outdo the original.

Way back in the fifties I became aware of Theo. Bikel's work in folk songs of many languages. I recently became interested in looking into his more recent work. I have enjoyed his later releases and was interested in comparing his current "voice" with older times.
This CD, "A Folksingers Choice" does take me back to the earlier time. These old recordings of Bikel, re-released on CD, confirm my memory of the earlier time. I don't find the work as great as I had remembered it, but still quite enjoyable.

If you don't like Klezmer, then don't bother, but if you love it and find it haunting and beautiful at the same time then this is an extraordinary recording by wonderful artists. It demonstrates both the exuberance of the Eastern European Jewish culture and it also demonstrates an emotional pathos with which it is hard to find comparison.
Many of the pieces are instrumental. Some are sung. Of those that are sung, most are in Yiddish. One, "Dance with Me to the End of Love", is in English. It is the title song for the album and deserves the position. It is a masterpiece.

For nostalgic Jewish music, this CD is a must. The latin twist to this music enhances, not detracts. I recommend it highly.

Fans of the incredibly handsome and supremely talented Burt Bacharach may now learn he is Jewish and a world of wonderfull recordings and soundtracks are yours for the asking as all his "dstuff" is thankfully available. I dare say that he sells more music today than he did in the 60s-70s. Buy and enjoy that first. If you are a true aficianado you then will be fascinated by the range of music that Bacharach inspires from Punk to Lounge and yes, Jewish. Someday I would love to hear Klezmer musicians have a go at this. But here, Bacharachs music is deconstructed and that unique Yiddisha talent for reflection, suffering even, ennui, arcane internecian and occult "schtick" is center stage. Very introspective the songs of love and loss are seen, ... Read More:

This album is fast becoming a standard "must-have" among klezmer afficionados, and is a wonderful introduction to the genre for first-time listeners. NOTE ABOUT INCORRECTLY LABELED TRACKS: The names for tracks 9 and 10 are reversed from that listed: Track 9, listed as "Shiroh", is actually "Doina", and Track 10, listed as "Doina", is in fact "Shiroh".
