I think it's safe to say there has never before been quite this confluence of stylistic tributaries in the history of recorded music. I suppose it's jazz, although of a very rare and arcane kind. A project like this could only come from the mind of Steven Bernstein. Not even such certified weirdoes as Jamie Saft, Curtis Hasselbring, or Josh Roseman could come up with this.

Way back in the fifties I became aware of Theo. Bikel's work in folk songs of many languages. I recently became interested in looking into his more recent work. I have enjoyed his later releases and was interested in comparing his current "voice" with older times.

This CD, "A Folksingers Choice" does take me back to the earlier time. These old recordings of Bikel, re-released on CD, confirm my memory of the earlier time. I don't find the work as great as I had remembered it, but still quite enjoyable.

Blood Oranges

If you can imagine this, combine wonderful neo-klezmer, Coltrane and Tyner, with a concept album akin to Seargent Pepper and you get Blood Oranges. The four musicians are incredibly talented, and play beautifully together. My 12 year old son loves this album-he is a jazz/rock bass player and had to show his (Daoist) teacher how cool this is. These guys are as good or better than the Klezmatics.
