For those unaware, 'Great Jewish Music' is a series released on John Zorn's Tzadik label, which pays homage to Jewish songwriters by way of a selection of Tzadik artists covering their tunes. The Serge Gainsbourg compilation is the second in the series, following Burt Bacharach. It doesn't quite match the Bacharach one, but is still well worth checking out.
The first two tracks are alone almost worth the price of admission. Elysian Fields' atmospheric take on 'Les Amours Perdues' discards the groove of the original, but it's still got plenty of soul, and is just beautiful. Then Mike Patton does all the voices (male and female), not to mention all the instruments, on 'Ford Mustang' and almost manages to outdo the original.

I love this CD! I've been listening to it to get my spirit ready for the high holy days and even shared the music with my cantor who wants to incorporate some of the melodies into our services. My favorites are V'Al Kulam and La Yehudim.

If your concept of "klezmer music" is some bunch of frenzied moderns playing clarinet as fast as possible, this is sure to disappoint.
However, if you are interested in hearing where the music came from, back in the days when it was illegal in most parts of Eastern Europe for Jews to play "loud instruments" like the clarinet, and instead performed on the tzimbl (or cymbalom) and fidl and perhaps a flute, there is little to compare to this wonderous reissue.
Joseph Moskowitz is the acknowledged greatest of the tzimbl players to have been recorded. (There may well have been better - but they weren't recorded!)
Indispensible for the true aficionado or serious student, and absolutly ... Read More:

I've been listening to Zorn's music for a while now, and it took a Live Masada String Trio performance, in person, to finally get me to purchase this. I saw the trio perform a few weeks ago at Zorn's club, The Stone, in lower Manhattan. From the first couple bars of the first song, I was hooked. I would say I listen to this live record more often than any other music I've picked up in a while - which is a pretty big deal considering my vast music collection.
For those unaware, John Zorn has had a group since the mid-90's called Masada which combines Klezmer music with avant-garde 'Ornette Coleman-style' jazz. The group performs out of two books of songs, all of which have been written by Zorn himself. There are literally hundreds ... Read More:
