Once the enfant terrible of new music, with his jump cut compositions and post-modern all inclusive sensibility, composer John Zorn has dedicated himself to the construction of the Masada song-book, a series of tunes that he hopes will eventually become Jazz standards. Based on traditional Yiddish scales and rhythms, Zorn's investigation of his own Jewish heritage has proven to be his most popular undertaking.
His initial forays into this song-book over a decade ago were documented by his own original Masada Quartet and later by chamber music ensembles, including his Masada String Trio. These infectious, tuneful pieces have now been handed over to a new generation to explore.

Gary Lucas, guitarist extraordinaire, unfurls his dynamic strings and lassos them around our ears as we become the blessed victims of the latest unleashing of his brilliance. Together with his Gods and Monsters gang, Gary assaults and redefines our aesthetics boundaries.
Right off the bat, he once again digs his digits into an axe and whacks out a fabulous phantasmagoria of slide guitar, blues-y licks, and lascivious vocal warnings, all woven around his fable of the delicious but dangerous Fata Morgana.
"Her icy stare, her mournful air can hypnotize all sailors
Who now full fathom five doth lie beneath her coral jailer
As cruel Morgana seals your fate just when you've come to nail her"

In September of 2003, John Zorn celebrated his fiftieth birthday through a series of performances at Tonic in Manhattan. During this series, two days worth of performances (four sets) were done by the Bar Kokhba Sextet-- the Masada String Trio (Mark Feldman- violin, Erik Friedlander- cello, Greg Cohen- bass) augmented by guitarist Marc Ribot, drummer Joey Baron and percussionist Cyro Baptista. This set devotes one of each of its three CDs to a set (for anyone curious, the second set is the one thats omitted).
The first set, running about an hour, finds the group in an excited mood, in particular drummer Joey Baron. I've often found that Baron's strength is in his subtlety, but this performance would never let you know that-- he's ferocious ... Read More:

Masada's studio albums never quite captured what the band was capable of-- live, the group is an experience, breathing into themselves and becoming more than the sum of their parts. "Live in Sevilla" is another fine example of this.
The band, for anyone unfamiliar, was put together by John Zorn to perform a songbook he wrote to be similar to Monk's-- themes upon which improvisation could occur. The catch is that Zorn wrote these with the so-called Jewish scales, lending that Middle Eastern meets Eastern European sensibility to it. The band-- modelled after Ornette Coleman's great quartets on his Atlantic albums-- Zorn on alto sax, Dave Douglas on trumpet, Greg Cohen on bass and Joey Baron on drums-- performs with a near-psychic level of spontaneous ...
