This will be my second copy, as I took this CD with me on a trip and left it in the rent car at the airport. I had taken it to work and people liked it so much, it came back by popular request. I ordered this CD in 2000 when it first came out. When I heard Mayakovsky's Smile on KNTU, driving between Dallas and Ft. Worth, I pulled off the road and wrote down what the DJ said it was. It's a trio out of Seattle with lyrical saxophones, dark chorded bass and drums with guitarist Bill Frisell guesting on several cuts.

SUN RA ARKESTRA .
If You still didn,t hear about Sun Ra ? It,s time to do so since I would call him just a "CLASSIC" and for sure UNIQUE

Browsing the Internet , I just remebered those Days visiting my Friends in Philly . Sun Ra was still alive and I guess I was one of the few Women he allowed to come around , the first who would get even on HIS Tourbus ! What an Honor :))

This is THE Pig Pen album to own. Miss Ann has some nice stuff, Day Light is okay, and Live in Poland is fun, but "V as in Victim" is just amazing. It's some of the most bizarre "jazz" I've heard (and I like the freaky stuff). There is a nice range of styles here, although the overall tone is pretty dark. Tunes like "V as in Victim" and "Again" are mournful while tunes like "Speech" and "Jazzmaster" are downright vicious.

This is definitely the most skillfully produced of the Pig Pen albums. Day Light suffers from a very compressed, bland palate, and the Live CD is, well, a live recording. The band has never been tighter than on V. The musicians are absolutely inspired throughout.

Bought on the recommendation of a friend who caught them live this album has certainly lived up to expectations. It's one of those CD's that gives up its best moments with repeated playing.The deal is an interplay between Scott Chalosen (various keyboards) and Aaron Gardner (Sax and flute) driven on by a rock solid rhythm section that is by parts funky and jazzy, but always solid and propel when needed, but can empathetically hang back as well. The pieces are extended work outs round a series of themes, but what makes it work so well is the strength of the material. Im orginally from Austin, and he would play at this great little bar called The Velvet Spade, every Thursday small space but great sound! Whether there was 8 or 100 people there his shows were the same. Energetic fluid and just down right nasty groove. His band is tight and in form. I would recommend seeing him anytime you get a chance the cd's are good but, defintely don't do him justice. In my opinion he's a talent thats been kept under radar but, for us thats a good thing. Cause its hard to see truly great talent in these days without paying the price.

These guys are so damn good that it hurts. Their latin funk jazz rock rhythms leave you no choice but to get up and dance. I now live in Southern Oregon, and would do anything to hear them. I've been listening to them for more than ten years, and I'm reduced to having to buy their CD's.

That's not a knock on the CD mind you, but once you hear it, you'll be clamoring to go and seem the live. I can't imagine being disappointed listening to a Rubberneck album.
