The year was 1990 and the quartet featured Joe Lovano on tenor saxophone & alto clarinet, Marc Johnson on bass, Bill Stewart on drums and of course the great man himself on guitar.
I love anything John Scofield does. His guitar sounds much more muted these days; this album is from back when it still used to wail a little. The uptempo tunes are brilliant enough but it's the ballads on this album that get to me; The beautiful "Keep Me In Mind", "The Guinness Spot", "Meant To Be" and "French Flics" are worth the price of the CD all by themselves. But other favourites are "Chariots", "Mr. Coleman To You" (a tribute to Ornette?) and the weird and wonderful "Lost In Space". Scofield writes all songs, naturally.

For me, this album of Bill Frisell is my favorite so far... it has some great masterpieces in it... beautiful melodies... This is actually my first album of Frisell I heard, and I still listen to it with pleasure through years. I highly recommend it!

Solid Sender is Sex Mob's follow up to their brilliant debut - Din of Inequity. For the uninitiated, Sex Mob is Steven Bernstein's zany downtown cover band. A free wheeling jazz quartet that has a predilection for covering pop songs, both past and present. Bernstein was also the trumpeter and musical director of John Lurie's Lounge Lizards. You can see here how both artists aesthetic sensibilities and musical sense of humor cross common paths. The final Lounge Lizards album featured a piece where all the "lizards" were yelling in unison, and here Bernstein uses a children's choir on one track.
The core group consists of band leader Steven on slide trumpet, alto sax shredder Briggan Krauss, drummer Kenny Wollesen and upright bassist Tony Scherr. Considering ... Read More:
Without doubt the quintessential 90's jazz funk revival record!
The london and ny funksters agree.....i just bought my fifth copy since i've lent and nevr retrieved it or its been just plain nicked...
I've asked to come and play parties here in the US where they'll get a huge crowd but no dice....Simon (the guitarist) has a mate from school called Barry Cronin who say's they are bit up their own backsides.....
PS for a continuation try and grab a rare copy of "High Havoc" the second. After that it goes a bit sour......the new one though "Clik" is ace....

This is one of my favorite albums produced by Soulive. Any fan of the Hammond B-3 organ will be amazed by the talent and style that Neal Evans brings to the organ. Having said that, the BEST song on this album is Azucar. Azucar has a real groovy beat to it, and I can't get enough of the B-3 on this song. Steppin' also has a superba beat that will get anyone out of their chair. The last song I'll speak about is So Live!. This song is 11+ minutes of pure improvisation. About to the 5 minute mark is where you can hear Neal's wailing organ; trembling over the beat. Overall, this album is a great start for anyone just getting a feel for Soulive.

Robert Walter may have been born on the West Coast, but his style is from New Orleans. And how funky it is! All of these 11 tracks (even the hidden'12th one tha tcovers a heavy metal song) posess serious groove and bite - New Orleans style.
And while hitting that deep pocket, Walter and his cohorts do not forget to show off their musicianship. All too often, funk jams can get boring due to meandering and directionless solos, but that is not the case here. Of particular note is Walter's organ and Gustalem's alto sax for their ability to keep solos exciting and climactic.
And when I say this sounds like a New Orleans record, I am the oppositte of kidding. If one closes their eyes during the second track (originally played by Dr John and the Meters) one could easily ... Read More:

I've had this album for quite a while now, and I thought that with repeated listens it would grow on me, that the grating fingers-on-blackboard effect the sound of that chromatic harmonica produces would gradually fade. But no, it still wrecks the album for me. I do like "Oakland", and I think the rest of the album would be good if I could ask my CD player to filter out the harmonica.
To me Hunter peaked with Charlie Hunter, Duo, and Analog Playground -- the Blue Notes.
Friends Seen and Unseen was a step back in the right direction. Right Now Move was unfortunate...

I love MMW. This EP, however, was not all I had hoped. Granted, The Dracula Remix and Macha, were very good, but everything else was not up to par.
