. . . but Roseman has difficulty making his admitedly engaging playful deconstructionism work throughout an entire disc. Part of the problem is that he kinda shoots his wad on the first two numbers, "Don't Be Cruel," and "If I Fell," surely some of the funniest and downright enjoyable instrumental cuts ever recorded. But he doesn't sustain it.
His approach works less well, though still admirably, on "Kashmir," a Led Zepplin tune, because Roseman's sensibility is less far removed from the original than with the Elvis and Beatles tunes, hence less surprise and less pleasure ensue. It scarcely works at all on the two tunes by Sun Ra, partly because they would be known to a much smaller audience, and partly ... Read More:

Great album. Jamie is just a plain flat out a great musician. As is with all JMP's album, this is a must buy. This is a band that you have to see live also. It makes the album listening a ten times better experience.
Without doubt the quintessential 90's jazz funk revival record!
The london and ny funksters agree.....i just bought my fifth copy since i've lent and nevr retrieved it or its been just plain nicked...
I've asked to come and play parties here in the US where they'll get a huge crowd but no dice....Simon (the guitarist) has a mate from school called Barry Cronin who say's they are bit up their own backsides.....
PS for a continuation try and grab a rare copy of "High Havoc" the second. After that it goes a bit sour......the new one though "Clik" is ace....

The year was 1990 and the quartet featured Joe Lovano on tenor saxophone & alto clarinet, Marc Johnson on bass, Bill Stewart on drums and of course the great man himself on guitar.
I love anything John Scofield does. His guitar sounds much more muted these days; this album is from back when it still used to wail a little. The uptempo tunes are brilliant enough but it's the ballads on this album that get to me; The beautiful "Keep Me In Mind", "The Guinness Spot", "Meant To Be" and "French Flics" are worth the price of the CD all by themselves. But other favourites are "Chariots", "Mr. Coleman To You" (a tribute to Ornette?) and the weird and wonderful "Lost In Space". Scofield writes all songs, naturally.
With great input from all four members ... Read More:

i really love the brian wilson contribution "bells of madness"...really cool song. also elvis costello's "milk of human kindness" is great. the most boring stuff on here is wasserman's solo compositions. contrary to the previous reviewer's comments, the collaborations on here are excellent overall

This is a nice and breezy set from what is officially the John Scofield Trio, recorded live in Munich, Germany in 1981. The vibe is very similar to that I enjoy on another John Scofield Trio live album, 2004's brilliant EnRoute. If you like that, then you definitely need this (and vice versa), though I should mention that Adam Nussbaum plays the drums on this set (while Bill Stewart is the drummer on the other). Bassist Steve Swallow plays on both.
Personally, I can never get enough of Scofield's guitar and if ever I picture myself chilling with a cold drink on a nice sunny day (or a warm summer night), with a gentle breeze blowing the curtains, this is the kind of music that I'll have playing in the background. It's truly beautiful.

I don't think there is an album out there that is reflective of the hip-hop, dance/club, and jazz culure. Oh wait! Yea there is. It's the Combustication remix EP. If you want to spend a mello evening with your girlfriend and listen to some music, just pop this title in. What will end up happenning is she will leave because your too into the music and thus too complex. But you'll be okay with that because you'll have a cutting edge collection of Medeski, Martin, and Woods Music that grooves hard. So keep an eye on it so your friends don't take it.

This is one of those CDs that does exactly what it says on the tin. Between the mid-80s and the end of the decade, John Scofield put out a numnber of outstanding albums including Still Warm, Blue Matter, Electric Outlet, Loud Jazz and Flat Out. The songs on this CD are the best of the ballads from those albums and as a sucker for ballads, I just couldn't resist.
The songs are handpicked by Scofield himself and according to the inner-sleeve info, he also chose the order in which they run on this CD. Fans who already have the albums listed above might think this particular release isn't worth investing in but the way the songs flow after one another here is really interesting. I feel this is a worthy addition to any Scofield fan's collection. Personally, I only have "Still ... Read More:

this is a record you can listen to a hundred times, and that hundredth time it will still put a big gooey smile on your face. not generally a jazz fan, too cliche, but this is a desert island disc if there ever was one. most of the band is still together, though without the brilliant keyboardist Itaal Shur, the killer vibes and yummy dirty trombone (sigh), but they still have the ripping tight drummer, the toppest top shelf sax player, the perfect trumpeter, and that wicked good bass player. man to go back in time and see the classic lineup tearing it up live one more time...
