So we miss Master D, but ADF's new album is outstanding. Musically, they're as curious and adventurous as ever. Lyrically, they've grown up some, still polemic, still anthemic, but their slogans have more bite, more complexity now, the better able to comment on the changing political environment. As usual they have their fingers on the pulse of everything that touches the marginalized members of our world- asylum seekers, battered wives, mistreated prisoners, everyone gets a voice. Watch and learn, rage against the machine, this is how not to sell out.

I discovered Bloque because of a David Byrne article that mentioned them. The article was about how the idea of "world music" is silly, because a) how can you possibly lump all the world's music not from the US and UK into one category? and b) the idea of world music implies that there's "authenticity" in the traditional sound of a particular country, which should never change.
Bloque was mentioned in the article as a band that blows gaping holes in this view of things, and do they ever. This record is loud, brash, energetic, a delightful mish-mosh of disparate genres, and doesn't quite fit on any shelf of the music store but would be much more at home in the rock section than the "world" one. I don't know a word of Spanish so I've ... Read More:

My first Cam excursion and definitely worth the trip. "Ghetto Love" and "Cycle Interlude" literally made me shiver. With some turntablists, the tracks take you first and foremost into rhythm, with others it's that startling and pleasing recognition when you find an old hook in a new place, with The Loa Project, you feel like you are riding the razor-thin edge of an iced mind.

I found this CD when I was in England in the spring of 97. I never heard of DJ Cam, but I was into Shadow & Krush and thought I'd take a chance. Good move. Although this CD was not at the same level as "Entroducing," "Meiso," or "Milight," it was still a solid effort and showed Cam's production abilities. I remember poping in this disc while riding in my group's van and driving to Glostenbury. The beats on this disc were a mash-up of Hip-Hop and electronica, making a bridge between the two styles and pulling an audience from both groups.
I'm glad I got the CD when I did; because I honestly have never seen a copy of it again. Worth the 10 pounds I paid for it and this may about 6 years late, but to the guy that wanted to know what ... Read More:

"Facts and Fictions" was originally released in 1995 and when it came out, sounded like nothing else. Because critics couldn't categorize it, ADF's debut was soon forgotten as most of England was lost in a euphoric haze of MOR Brit Pop. This is a true shame because "Facts and Fictions" clearly foreshadows the birth of ADF's incredible vision. Musically the album combines many diverse styles including early jungle/drum and bass, hip hop, Bengali folk music, hindi filmi, bhangra and good guitar Brit pop, to name a few. There is also an unmistakable Bengali culture stamp throughout the album (two of the members are of Bengali background...Aniruddha Das, A/K/A Dr. Das and Deedar Zaman A/K/A Master D, who incidentally is the younger brother ... It's surprising this band isn't more popular outside the UK. I absolutely love this album. There's no way to pigeon-hole their music but that's OK because every track in this album is marvellous, even the remake of "You've Got a Friend". It's filled with hit material like the title track, "Sometimes", "You Are The Universe", "Day by Day", "Highest High", "Stay Gone"...the list goes on. It grooves, it jives, it's slick and Siedah Garrett lends a good dose of R&B that mainstream fans will welcome (she's since been replaced by lesser-known British vocalist Carleen Andersen who is even better suited to their music - check out their Greatest Hits album). Highly recommended.

Great album. Few artists can make you want to shake your butt and make you think about social issues AT THE SAME TIME, thanks Apache! Oh, and Raggamuffin Girl is one of my fav songs of all time.
