This is a simple compilation of (a few of) Tschaikovsy's lighter works performed by some of the world's most renowned artists. Nice CD for someone who is learning to appreciate good music like myself.
Release Date April 16, 1995
Excellent story of Tchaikovsky. All the classics with an engrossing story. Not a dull moment. Fun Fact: Did you know that his name is really spelled: TSCHAIKOWSKI (Polish name spelled in a Polish way, the Russians wanted him all to themselves,so slowly and through the years, the name was Russified, and not by TSCHAIKOWSKI). CD is Great!

This is Maurizio Pollini's second CD playing Mozart piano concerts with the Vienna Philharmonic and conducting from the keyboard. The playing is enchantingly beautiful and the performances are lucidly recorded.
The program was played on June 2 and June 3 in the Musikverein in Vienna.
The evening program began with Mozart's Concerto No. 12 for Piano and Orchestra, A Major, KV 414. It was followed by Stravinsky's Octet for Wind Instruments; Hugo Wolf's Serenade G Major, "Italian Serenade"; and closed with Mozart's Concerto No. 24 for Piano and Orchestra, C Minor, KV 491.
When I first listened to this CD, I found myself playing it through several times in a row. One friend with limited interest in classical music hear it, went ... Read More:

I really like the musical selections that are on this CD. The recordings seem to be from years ago and the quality isn't quite as good as modern recordings, but I like the selections a lot.

There's something for every Tchaikovsky lover on this disc. From Swan Lake to Onegin, many of Tchaikovsky's most-known melodies are on this disc. I'd have preferred more than an excerpt of the first movement of Piano Concerto No. 1, but this disc is a great introduction to Tchaikovsky's works.

I don't usually post reviews here on amazon but this set deserves an exception. I shopped very carefully to find the "best" of the complete sets (shelling out $80 requires some attention to detail). After reading various reviews and sampling every recording I could find, I purchased this set.
Before I begin, I should say I don't believe that any performance of classical music is "definitive." There are good recordings and bad recordings, yes, but among the good ones, it is often difficult to decide which is the "best." I usually aim for an excellent sound coupled with a solid and moving interpretation of the work. For Mozart's piano concertos, there are several sets which contain both, with the individual recordings varying in the finer ... Read More:

The recording is a fantastic snap shot of a truly great artist at the top of his game. The Lp version is a bit more lush in terms of overall sound. I wish someone would remaster this to 180 gram vinyl. This set is a wonderful opportunity to experience music playing beyond belief!

Beautifully interpreted, Barenbolm plays delicately and skillfully. This music is perhaps the epitome of the romantic classical era of piano music. Mendelssohn composed piece after piece of melodic and engaging piano music that eventually became this complete cycle. Some pieces may grab you more than others but overall, everyone of them expresses emotion. It surprises me that these pieces are not better known to anyone who loves classical piano music.

For the uninitiated, the Loussier Trio has been doing Jazz renditions of Bach's works for over 40 years now. On Amazon alone you can find two or three dozen albums from this catalogue, and it can be difficult to tell them apart.
This particular album is by far the most modern; indeed, there have been more recent releases of remasterings of the original 60s recordings, but this album represents a newer generation of the Trio.
The differences between the two generations Bach treatments are profound. The original interpretations by the Trio were essentially Bach played on Jazz instruments; but in this newer generation, the Trio is playing truly Jazz-styled renditions of the old works, taking more liberty with structure and flow to achieve a distinctive ...
